VFHQ News – June 2008

Clips from Chris

Sitting back preparing my clips for this month, I couldn’t help but think of all of you, my quilting friends. First I was very sad learning that we lost a great friend, Joan Lendacky.  Yet that loss made me appreciate the life we have within us and the value of the friendships we all share.  And even though friendships are at times challenged (since no one’s perfect), I know deep down we are strong together as friends, and there is so much we have to offer one another.  As my grandma always said, life is too short, enjoy everyone & everything.

Regarding those wonderful friendships, I must say I enjoy all of our guild meetings, however May’s meeting, I felt, was especially great. I apologize that it ran a bit late but our friends, Shellie Blake, Judy Snook, and Beth Quigley did a wonderful job on the gadgets and getting our quilts squared and ready for quilting.  (Do I hear workshop in the near future…oh, yes.)  Thank you all for being so supportive of one another.  Let’s keep living life to the fullest, enjoying each other, and of course quilting.

I look forward to seeing all of you, my friends at our picnic…see you at guild!
- Chris

June Meeting - June 17, 2008

Our Traditional Guild Picnic - Don't forget that our picnic begins at 6:00 p.m. Refreshments:

Remember to bring food to share as follows:

 - If your last name begins with A—F, bring a dessert

 - If your last name begins with G—L, bring a salad or hors d’oeuvre

- If your last name begins with M—Z, bring a main dish

To make this a successful picnic, we do rely on all our members to bring one of the above.  Thanks to all of you, it is always a wonderful meeting.

Along with the picnic, we will have a boutique workshop to make items to be sold in the boutique at our quilt show.  We are making several different items, but below are four of them for which you’ll want to bring some materials:

1.  Fabric Star Ornament:  Two 5" squares of holiday or colorful fabric.

2.  Fused Appliqué Ornament:  Two rectangles, 31/2" x 4 1/4" for background; coordinating scraps (2-3" size) of small-scale prints or tone on tone for designs.  Sewing kit that includes fabric and paper scissors, needle and non-permanent fabric marker

3.  6” x 6” mini-quilts:  small fall color fabric scraps – reds, small plaids, browns, tan, beige, purple,       chartreuse, oranges, gold, yellow, black, and greens, any small prints, solids, or mottled prints; 5½” squares  of Warm and Natural batting, paper scissors.

4.  Yo-Yo wreath:  dark and medium green fabric scraps (minimally 5”); red and homespun scraps (at least 5”); dark green, black and/or red thread; fabric scissors; hand sewing needles.

If you have a basket of fabric scraps lying around and you’ve been wondering what to do with it, your time has come.

Bees Bees Bees Bees Bees

Our Bees are open to all members of the Valley Forge Homestead Quilters Guild.  They offer an opportunity to share quilting information and renew friendships.  We work on our own hand projects (as there is usually not any room for sewing machines); we assist others with their quilts by suggesting ways to layout quilt blocks, work with colors, etc.; and it’s a time to enjoy each others company in a smaller venue than our guild meetings.  Please check your calendar and see if you are able to join one of the Bees.  If you would like to host one of the Bees, please contact Jean Hayden (Afternoon Bee) or Beth Quigley (Evening Bee).

A Need and an Opportunity

The Guild will again have a table at Quilt Odyssey 2008:  July 24 – 27, 2008, at the Hershey Lodge & Convention Center to sell tickets for our raffle quilt.  If you plan on attending the show, please consider volunteering to sell raffle tickets with us for a short time.  We’ve discovered a fun way to orchestrate this.  You’ll sign up for half-day shifts during which time you’ll enjoy the show for an hour, then enjoy sitting and selling raffle tickets for an hour… trading off with others during your shift every other hour.  In other words, during a half-day shift, you’ll be at the table just 2 hours with an hour break between.  Make sense?  It’s a great way to enjoy the show without getting too tired while also providing a service to the guild!  A sign-up sheet will be passed around at the June guild meeting (sign up soon—seats at quilt shows are hard to come by).  Thanks so much,
- Cathy Fennell & Lou Chandler

Valley Forge Quilters invited

Homemakers Country Quilters are hosting Eleanor Burns’ sister, Pat on Friday, June 20, 2008 and have opened this program to our guild.  Homemakers Country Quilters meet at the 4-H Center, 1015 Bridge Road, Collegeville, PA.  This program will start at 9:00.  Sounds like a road trip.

Two Quilt Exhibits at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

Gee’s Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt:  September 16 – December 14, 2008.  This exhibition takes a fresh look at the quilting tradition in Gee’s Bend, Alabama, introducing new artists and new motifs in works ranging from the early twentieth century through 2005.  Nearly 65 quilts, all of which are being shown for the first time will be presented.  See generations of quilt making as it takes on the highest form of expression and innovation.

African-American Quilts from the Ella King Torrey Collection:  Fall 2008.  The collection was formed between 1981 and 1983 and includes thirteen examples by leading southern quilt makers.  Among its highlights are an appliquéd “word quilt” by the Mississippi artist Sarah Mary Taylor (born 1916) and one of her “hand” quilts, a version commissioned for the film The Color Purple.

Welcome to Our New Members

Shellie Blake introduced Eileen Almeida to our guild.  Eileen has been quilting for 22 years and has been interested in quilting forever.  Eileen is self-taught and enjoys hand quilting.  Although, she has made several bed-sized quilts, she really enjoys “make it and take it” projects.  Besides quilting, Eileen also enjoys scrap booking.  Eileen is a retired school teacher who has a daughter living in Australia.  Her two sons are away at college while her husband and pets are at home with her.

Candy Garrido heard about VFHQ Guild through Cathy Fennell at a Thimbleberries club gathering at Steve’s Sewing and Vacuum.  Candy has been sewing since she was ten years old.  She was a 4-H participant for many years and was taught to sew by her mother who was a 4-H advisor.  Although she has sewed for many years, Candy has just begun to quilt and feels it will be a great way to learn more from those who already quilt.  She enjoys all types of sewing and has completed a twin size bed quilt.  Candy also enjoys a good mystery book and working in her flower garden.  She works as an Insurance Business Analyst and has been married for eighteen years.  Candy has a fifteen year old son plus two dogs – seven year old Buddy, a Golden Retriever and two year old Tater, a Beagle/Retriever/Labrador mix.

Donna LeBlanc brought her mother, Irene LeBlanc, to our April meeting and Irene became our 100th member.  She began to sew and quilt as a child with her mother especially to make things for the Church bazaars.  Then as a young mother, Irene took some “real” quilt lessons in a class.  From then on she was hooked and her stash began to multiply.  Irene learned quilting using feed sack material and later on learned how to shop and buy fabrics.  She enjoys mostly traditional projects, i.e. bed quilts, wall hangings, table runners, cushions.  She saves all her scraps.  Irene also enjoys gardening, playing board games, exercising and reading.

Cheryl McGuire heard about us from Maryanne Brooke.  She has been quilting for three – four years.  Maryanne talked her into taking a class in beginning quilting at a continuing education program and has been quilting ever since.  Her favorite quilt block is the schoolhouse and traditional quilting projects are her favorites.  As well as completing a bed-size quilt, Cheryl also enjoys knitting, spinning wool, weaving, bobbin lace and rug hooking.  She is a computer technician and has been married for twenty-five years or so.  Cheryl has three daughters who are twenty-eight, twenty-two, and seventeen.  She has two grandsons, ages six and seven.  Not only does this keep her busy, she loves to cook and read.

Are you up for the CHALLENGE?

There’s still plenty of time for you to develop a winning project for our annual quilt challenge.  By way of reminder, the rules are as follows:

VFHQ Challenge  2007/2008
.....
Pennsylvania

Choose any landmark, historical event, flora, fauna, tradition, location, or motto that conveys some essence of our great state of Pennsylvania and devise a way to creatively express it in a quilt (which you will, of course, design and create).

Use any construction technique and any fabric you wish.  And you may use components that are appliquéd, pieced, embroidered, cross-stitched, painted, embellished, etc., or a combination thereof.

You must include with your submission a typed description explaining the aspect of Pennsylvania you chose and any relevant rational for your design.  Your description should be between 50 to 75 words (no more than 100 words) using 12-point type (or standard typewriter size), on a card or paper no larger than 8½ x 8½.  (If you don’t have access to a computer or typewriter, a neatly hand-printed description will be acceptable.)

Your creation can be any quilted item (including jacket, bag, etc.).

The size of a quilted wall hanging should be no larger than 50" on any given side.

Your creation should be something made during the coming year (between 10/2007 and 9/2008).

As usual, one entry per-person will be accepted.

Completed challenge quilts will be displayed and voted on at the September guild meeting in 2008.

All questions regarding this challenge should be directed to Linda Hamel at 610.454-1283 (answers from others cannot be considered officially binding).
