VFHQ News – May 2008
Clips from Chris
As I pack my bags to prepare for one
of my favorite guild events…retreat time.
I find it so funny to see my dog Tina’s reaction to the suitcase coming
out. First the pathetic sad look, then
she attempts to pack for me, although her choice of items that she feels I need
and what I truly need are so very different.
She thinks I need a few of her stuffed toys, dog bones but me, I worry I
didn’t take all of my necessities, fabric, thread, pins and of course
clothing. Then she moves on to the worry
stage, where she doesn’t want to leave my side.
I truly do miss her along with the bird and of course the hubby but they
all know I’ll be home soon enough so they best take advantage of time away from
me, enjoying those late night snacks, walks in the dark, and just bumming around
so I’ll see you after retreat!

May Meeting Preview,
NEED QUILTING HELP?
Come to our May meeting and enjoy two great topics:
Learn about helpful gadgets to make
your job easier. Our two resident Gadget Queens, Beth Quigley and
Judy Snook, will be on hand to demonstrate. If you have gadgets you'd
like to share, please contact Judy Snook and let her know you will be bringing
something to share.
Next, our own outstanding professional
longarm quilter, Shellie Blake, will explain what you
need to do and say when you bring your quilt to a longarm
quilter to be finished. At the same time, Shellie will show us how to
"square up" a quilt (To be honest, I never knew, and I've been
quilting a long, long time.) and how to finish the quilt with a perfect
binding.

Bees Bees Bees Bees Bees…
Our
Bees are open to all members of the Valley Forge Homestead Quilters Guild. They offer an opportunity to share quilting
information and renew friendships. We
work on our own hand projects (as there is usually not any room for sewing
machines); we assist others with their quilts by suggesting ways to layout
quilt blocks, work with colors, etc.; and it’s a time to enjoy each others
company in a smaller venue than our guild meetings. Please check your calendar and see if you are
able to join one or both of the Bees each month. If you would like to host one of the Bees,
please contact Jean Hayden (Afternoon Bee) or Beth Quigley (Evening Bee).

Calling All Gadgeteers
Do
you have a gadget that you think really works? Makes quilting
easier? Helps you to be more accurate? Is handy for storage?
Aids in making any part of quilting less stressful on your body? Any
gadget you are surprised that it really is helpful? We would love
to see/hear about it at the May meeting. Beth and I have "a
few" things to share - we'd love to add what you have discovered.
Please call Judy Snook,

Our Quilt Show
Boutique: This area of our quilt show is a consignment
shop of your handmade items. Marge Quinn
and Jackie Santangelo welcome your items that you
would like to sell in the boutique.
Please remember that 10% of what you sell goes to the guild. Also, all members are asked to donate an item
for sale in the boutique and those profits go to the guild to support our
programs.
Staffing: One of the few responsibilities we all have
as members is participating in the staffing of our biennial quilt show. Staffing can include: helping at the
registration desk, the raffle quilt table, the Chinese Auction, Grandma’s
attic, security, helping in the kitchen with the food, white gloving, and
set-up and taking down of the show. A
sign-up sheet for assisting in the various areas was sent around at the last
guild meeting. Thanks to all who signed
up but there are more times available to assist. The book will go around at the May meeting
and every meeting after until all time slots are filled. Please sign up but if
you want to communicate your preferences immediately, contact Chris Candello.
All chair people: On
Fat Quarter Raffle
The
current Quarter Raffle drawing will occur at June’s guild meeting. The fabric theme for this time is
Contemporary/Retro fabric. Here are a couple of ideas for
contemporary/retro fabrics: Kaffee Fassett, Amy Butler, Michael Miller, Timeless Treasures,
Marie Kelzer, and Free Spirit. To participate, simply bring a
fat quarter, place it in the designated basket, along with your name, and
you’ll be eligible for the drawing to win them all! You will
receive one chance to win for each fat quarter you contribute. The
guidelines are simple:
1.
The fabric must be a fat quarter measuring 18" X 22".
2.
It should be washed and ironed
3.
It must keep to the announced theme
4. It should be “quilt-shop-quality” fabric
Any
questions, contact Jean Corday.
Many Thanks
Just a quick note of
thanks for your thoughts and prayers during my husband’s medical
adventure. As you know, due to some
rather nasty and highly unusual complications from surgery, his expected 1-day
hospital stay turned into 11. The
good news is that the doctors believe that the cancer has been eliminated. The bad news is that this saga was pretty
miserable and scary, he lost a lot of weight and muscle mass and still has
limited stamina. But he's on the mend,
feeling good, and is up to his old tricks of doing more physical stuff than
people half his age are able to do.
Please know that your kind wishes and prayers meant a great deal to me
during that truly frightening time.
Thanks so much!
Lou
A Note from B.J. Titus
Hi Chris,
First, I would like to thank you very
much for all your hard work in setting up the tables/chairs, irons/ironing
boards, and the delicious lunch. Whew...and I thought I was busy. You did an
outstanding job of making us very comfortable.
Saturday was definitely a highlight in
my quilting career. To see your members working so enthusiastically on their
projects simply filled my heart with joy. I would very much like to receive
digital images of their completed projects if they would be so inclined to send
them to me bjtitus3@comcast.net.
Again, thank you and your members for
sponsoring my workshop. I look forward to seeing you all again at your quilt
show in October, if not before.
Best regards,
B.J.

Read About Fictional Quilting
Chiaverini,
Jennifer. The
If you
are a Jennifer Chiaverini fan then you already know
that her latest novel, The Winding Ways Quilt has been in the bookstores since
the beginning of April. This new book
continues the story of Sylvia Compson and her friends
but in this book some of the original quilters and founders of Elm Creek Manor
are moving on and away from this lovely place in
Schitano,
Arlene. Quilt As Desired: A Harriet Truman/Loose Threads Mystery.
Harriet Truman’s husband kept his
genetic illness from her and then died and left her by herself. To help her, Harriet’s Aunt Beth invites her
to run her long-arm quilting business while Aunt Beth takes a long needed
vacation. Harriet is reluctant but goes
anyway only to find that she really has missed her quilting. She makes many new friends, some are wonderful
and some are not so nice as strange things begin to
happen to the quilts that she is working on as well as to one of her aunt’s
best friends. I read this in one night,
too, I just couldn’t put it down and I don’t really like mystery stories. Arlene promises that this is the first of
many Loose Threads Mysteries.
Thayer,
Terri. Wild Goose Chase: A quilting
mystery.
Dewey Pelicano is a computer techie but with the sudden death of
her mother, she becomes the owner of a successful quilt shop. Her sister-in-law is her problem staff member
but during a national quilt show where they have set up their booth, strange
things start to happen including several murders. If you love to attend quilt shows especially
the vendors, you’ll want to read this involving mystery story. Again, I read it in one night,
I could not put it down until Dewey was cleared of all charges. Terri is working on another in this series
entitled Old Maid’s Puzzle.
