VFHQ News – September 2008

 Clips from Chris

As summer nears the end and fall is just around the bend, I sit back and enjoy the harvest from the local farmer, trying to decide on what to do with the eggplant.  Then that infamous quilter thought flashes…it goes with my workshop runner! Of course, that leads me to think, oh my, it’s Quilt show time (real panic).  Wow, those two years have gone by so fast. But here are the real questions - are we all ready, are the quilts ready?  I do worry about our dear friend Jean Hayden, she may be loosing sleep.  She is counting quilts, not sheep!  She worries about whether we sold enough raffle tickets, not that she has to make the donuts!  Are the venders going to pan out?  All of those worries for one person are way too much, so let’s not disappoint our friend and all get busy preparing for our 2008 Quilt Show.  Happy Quilting J

- Chris

September Meeting – September 16, 2008

The “Pennsylvania” challenge quilts will be displayed, voted upon, and ribbons presented.  If you have a challenge quilt you’re presenting, please bring it in a brown paper bag (with no identification), no later than 6:30 PM to our meeting.  Deliver it to the stage area-left.  Cover your label, or leave it off your quilt.  Be sure to also bring your typed description (75 words or less) explaining how you used the theme. It’s important that you notify Linda Hamel now, 610-454-1283, if you plan to bring a challenge quilt (even if you’re not yet positive that you’ll get it done, notify Linda) so we can gauge how many quilt stands to set up for the evening.  (As usual, only one entry per member).  We will also have our “3rd” giant fabric sale.  Please see more information about the sale in this newsletter.  Following all these festivities, next year’s challenge will be revealed.   Our challenge night is always a delightful evening you won’t want to miss.

EVENING Bee – 4th Tuesday – September 23, 2008, 6:30-9:00 pm, at the home of Chris Candello, 322 Vista Drive, Phoenixville, PA, 610-948-1061.

October

AFTERNOON Bee – 2nd Tuesday – October 14, 2008, 12:30 – 3:30 pm, at the home of Kate Sevensky, 1 Paxon Circle, Broomall, PA. 610-359-9449.

Our Bees are open to all members of the Valley Forge Homestead Quilters Guild.  They offer an opportunity to share quilting information and renew friendships.  We work on our own hand projects (as there’s not usually room for sewing machines); we assist each other by suggesting ways to layout quilt blocks, work with colors, etc.; and we enjoy each others company in a smaller venue.  Please check your calendar and see if you are able to join one or both of the Bees this month.  If you would like to host one of the Bees, please contact Jean Hayden (Afternoon Bee) or Beth Quigley (Evening Bee).

Quilt Show News and Needs

The next meeting of the chair people for the quilt show will be September 8, 2008 at 7:00.  We will meet at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints off Trooper Road in Trooper, PA (map available on the guild web site).

Decorations:  Martha Klein, Quilt Show Decorator Committee Chair, is asking members to share their autumn decorative plants.  Mums work really well as decoration but any autumn decorative plants, as well as pumpkins, will be accepted for use during the quilt show.  No cornstalks, please.  Plants should be dropped off on Thursday, October 23.  All plants need to be picked up at the end of the show on October 25.  For more information, please contact Martha Klein.

Set-up:  We need to borrow from our members any quilt stands you may have, stools (like milking stools or even Rubbermaid plastic stools), and children’s chairs.  We also need stair-step units to help hang the quilts, as well as floor lamps, lights, extension cords and, power strips.  Be sure to put your name on everything you bring.

Get the word out:  If you can take flyers to quilt stores, libraries, etc. they’re available from Jean Hayden and Donna Raymond.  If you live on a busy street you might want to post a couple of signs on your property (two signs at either end of your property yield 5-times the visibility of just one).  Signs can be picked up at the September Guild meeting.

Staffing:   If you haven’t communicated your preferences to Chris (when you’d like to staff and which areas), be sure to do so at the September guild meeting or email her at chriscandello@comcast.net.  We need everyone to participate in the staffing of this event.

Money Matters:  For the various Quilt Show Committee Chairs, make sure you staple your receipts to an expense reimbursement form and submit them to Gail Dovalovsky for reimbursement at your earliest convenience.  The form can be found on our website.

Quilt Submission:  You will be checking in your quilts at our October Guild meeting.  Each quilt entry needs to be enclosed in a pillowcase or cloth bag that is labeled with the following information:

Your name

Quilt name

Category – remember, if the item pertains to something done as a guild activity, it’s the name of that activity that is to be listed as the category (the size categories, that relate to the other quilts you’ve made, are not relevant here)

If any of the information was missing from your quilt entry forms, contact Cathy Fennell immediately to complete that information.

Boutique:  If you’re submitting items to be sold at the boutique, please let Jacque or Marge know by the September Guild meeting.  There’s still time to create items to be sold on consignment – it’s a great opportunity to make some money.

Kitchen:  As usual, baked goods are needed.  A sign up sheet will go around at the September Guild meeting if you are able to contribute.

Grandma’s Attic:  Gather items that you’d like to donate to Grandma’s attic and get them to Ruth Heslin or Jean Corday.  Last chance to donate will be Thursday, October 23, 2008.

Chinese Auction:  If you’re making an item (or contributing an item) for the Chinese auction, notify Patty Fulton and Judy Snook at the September Guild meeting.

Guild Workshops Mark Your Calendars!

UFO Workshop – bring your unfinished projects to complete in time for the Quilt Show.

DATE:    September 13, 2008

TIME:     9:30 – 4:00 PM

PLACE:  Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, King of Prussia, PA

COST:    $5.00

BRING:  Unfinished Objects, whatever it takes to finish them.

Giant Fabric & Quilting Book Sale

September 16, 2008

Clear out your unwanted fabric from your stash – fabrics you liked when purchased, but that you now know they are probably not going to get used. Included in the sale this year are any quilting books you may want to part with or duplicates you may have.  Why not sell them at our September 18th meeting?  All monies realized would go directly back to you so that you can buy more new fabric to replace what you just sold.  And remember – one quilter’s stash-trash is another quilter’s treasure.  So whether you’re bringing fabric to sell or not, come prepared with cash for those treasures you’re sure to find!

Here are the guidelines:

You set the price

Each piece of fabric, “package” of fabrics or quilting books must be clearly labeled with:

- your name

- price you are asking

- yardage or size of fabric (not for books)

Put all this information on a removable label or tag so when the buyer goes to pay at the cashier table it can be recorded on the “sellers” sheet.

You may also sell kits, completed tops or orphan blocks.  (PLEASE no U.F.O.s.)  All items or packages must be labeled like above.

Pre-register your name with Sally Rapp (610-489-6892) by Friday, September 14 if you plan to sell fabric.  Since we have to plan the set-up in advance, only names registered will be given table space at the September meeting.

Buyers need to pay in cash, so come prepared.

Bring your own shopping bag to take home your purchases.

We hope this will give members an opportunity to earn some money for themselves while cleaning out your fabric stash or quilting books to make room for more.

If you have questions, please call Sally Rapp or Gloria Clark.  Members who wish to participate must notify Sally before Saturday, September 13, 2008.  Members who don’t sign up or notify Sally will not have a space.

Fat Quarter Raffle

The current Fat Quarter Raffle drawing will occur at September’s guild meeting.  The fabric theme for this time is Thimbleberries.  To participate, simply bring a fat quarter, place it in the designated basket, along with your name, and you’ll be eligible for the drawing to win them all!   You will receive one chance to win for each fat quarter you contribute.  The guidelines are simple:

1.  The fabric must be a fat quarter measuring 18" X 22".

2.  It should be washed and ironed

3.  It must keep to the announced theme

4.  It should be “quilt-shop-quality” fabric

Any questions, contact Jean Corday.

Cash for Stash aka 50-50 With a Twist

Our first 50-50 game was very successful with Chris Candello winning $15.50. We’ll be playing this standard version of the game at the next guild meeting.  We’ll put a twist on this game in November.

You can purchase your tickets before the meeting and during the break.

Welcome!

Valley Forge Homestead Quilters welcomes our newest member Lois Allen Charles.  Lois resides in King of Prussia and heard about us from a local neighbor.  Over the years she has done embroidery, counted cross-stitch, sewing, and quilting.  Lois became interested in quilting in 2000 when she watched a PBS documentary about quilts and art quilts that she thought was fascinating.  She also owns four family heirloom quilts which added to her interest and desire to learn to quilt.  She enjoys art applied to quilts and making her own designs.  Lois also enjoys painting, reading, teaching children art, gardening, cooking, baking, and designing.  Lois’s occupation is painting and showing her paintings in art shows or local businesses.  She did a painting of the King of Prussia Inn for the Chamber of Commerce and has been in many juried art shows over the years with her paintings/prints in private/public collections.  Lois is married and has three grown children, as well as two dogs and two cats.  Lois’ website is www.loisallencharles.com.  Welcome, Lois!

October Meeting Preview – October 21, 2008

It’s Quilt Show Time!  Bring all the quilts you registered to display at our quilt show.  Each will need to be contained in a cloth bag (like a pillow case), labeled with your name, quilt name, and category, written on masking tape.  Please make sure you have a label on your quilts, also.  Your quilts will be formally checked in and you’ll receive a receipt.

Recipe

Several people asked for the recipe for Prosciutto puffs so here it is:

1 cup water

6 tablespoons butter

1/8 teaspoon pepper

1 cup all-purpose flour

5 eggs

3/4 cup finely chopped prosciutto or fully cooked ham-for the prosciutto I asked for the slice to be just slightly thicker than normal and got 6 slices

1/4 cup minced chives

In large saucepan, bring water, butter and pepper to a boil.  Add the flour all at once and stir until a smooth ball forms.  Remove from the heat and let stand 5 minutes.

Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.  Continue beating until mixture is smooth and shiny.  Stir in prosciutto and chives.

Drop by heaping teaspoonfuls onto greased baking sheets.  Bake at 425 degrees for 18-22 minutes or until golden brown.  Remove to wire racks.  Serve warm.  Refrigerate leftovers.  Makes 4 1/2 dozen.
