VFHQ News – April 2009

Clips from Chris

Now that spring has sprung, it’s been a busy one so far …guild meeting, a trip to New York, family entertaining, workshop, executive board meeting, now onto Lancaster.  My husband asks daily when will I see you, are you ever staying home?  I remind him that I must do all of these things, it’s my role as president.  Really I’m just trying to keep up with my dear friend Jean Hayden — now that is a lady on the go!  Speaking of ladies on the go, our most recent workshop “Weaver Fever”, taught by our friend Shellie Blake, was very productive, with 30 busy quilters.  The majority agreed it was the most they have sewn at a class, and the end results are that they are well on their way to awesome quilts.  Believe it or not some members bought two fabric coordinates with plans to make a second “Weaver Fever” quilt.  I can’t wait to see all of them, hopefully by April’s meeting, you go girls!

- Chris Candello

April Meeting:  April 21, 2009

Barbara Lenox will visit our guild and present her topic - When You Work with a Plaid, the Plaid Works with You!  She will explore the plaid profile – a combo of characteristics determined by both grid type and color; purchasing and prepping plaid fabric; and strategies for using plaid fabric.

Barbara Lenox is a quiltmaker who teaches classic, traditional pieced patterns. She has been making quilts for over 20 years. Her earliest “quilting” memory is reading Nancy Drew books under the frame while her grandmother and great-aunt quilted. She and her husband live in southeastern Pennsylvania near Amish Country.  For more about Barbara, visit http://www.barbaralenox.com/

REMINDER:  Please bring your completed boxes from our March meeting to put on display!

Our Bees are open to all members of the Valley Forge Homestead Quilters Guild.  They offer an opportunity to share quilting information and renew friendships.  We work on our own hand projects (there’s not usually room for sewing machines); we assist each other by suggesting ways to layout quilt blocks, work with colors, etc.; and we enjoy each others company in a smaller venue.  Please check your calendar and see if you are able to join one or both of the Bees this month.  If you would like to host one of the Bees, please contact Jean Hayden (Afternoon Bee) or Beth Quigley (Evening Bee).

This workshop with Mimi Dietrich, celebrated quilter whose books have sold over one half million copies, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us as quilters to learn from the master right in our own backyard.  The quilt we will be making with her is entitled "Twilight in the Garden".  This is a scrappy quilt for which you, if you have any kind of stash at all, will not have to purchase any fabric.  In the first half of the class we will machine piece blocks for the center of the quilt using a fast technique called "Mary Triangles".  In the second half of the class, we will learn to appliqué the vine, leaves, and hearts around the border.  If you prefer, you don't have to add the appliqué around the border.  It's beautiful with or without.  Or, if you prefer, you may iron-on the appliqué pieces.  This is a fun class for all skill levels.

I might add that if you take a class with Mimi at any quilt show the cost will be more than double what you will pay taking the class at our guild.  We are charging only $30.  I will have a picture of the quilt at our April and May meetings.  Mimi offers free patterns on her website: www.mimidietrich.com

Please call me at 610-687-1728 or e-mail me at gloriaquilts60@aol.com if you have any questions or if you need more information.

Chester County Quilting

My Birthday Week Sale: It’s April, and you know what that means: I’m going to be 39 again! To celebrate, I’m going to put my fat quarter bundles on sale all month – buy on, get one half off.  This is a very popular sale, so stop in and pick your favorites.  I’ve been busy cutting fat quarters, and tons (really!) of new fabrics and charms have arrived, which means one thing – temptation!

Go Green – Recycling for Quilters: Lots of you have taken advantage of the magazine and pattern freebies here in the shop.  If you’d like to unload some of the unwanted magazines and patterns that are clogging up your sewing area, please feel free to drop them off here at the shop.  You’ll be making space for the projects that you REALLY want to work on, while giving someone else an opportunity to find something that’s new to them!
- Ramona

Thanks to Joan and Jean

Dearest Joan,

WOW.  We are speechless!   The quilts are truly works of art and works from the HEART.  They are simply beautiful!  Thank you for capturing the dreams of these young children in foster care – these testimonies will last well into the future – Thank you.  Thank you.  Thank you!

I left a long voice message on your home phone as well.  So sorry, yesterday we were in the throes of moving and I didn’t get adequate time to call and personally thank you for your incredible and wonderful gift to the National Adoption Center.

When you return from your trip, please be in touch as we would like to share pictures (yours AND ours) of the quilts here in our office, as well as pictures of your process!  Little did you know when you asked about any volunteer project what you would get.  It was the PERFECT volunteer activity for you (AND your friends – please extend our thanks to them).

On behalf of all those at the National Adoption Center, we express our deep gratitude!

Susan Carlson Three-day Workshop Sponsored by Keystone Quilters

Join the Keystone Quilters on July 13, 14, and 15, 2009 in Quakertown, PA for Susan’s newest class (Cutting Loose).  It combines aspects of her earlier classes with her evolving techniques of fabric collage.  In this class, she demonstrates a looser approach to the piecing and assembly of a wall quilt.  Emphasis will be placed on the collage piecing process.  Patterns or templates will not be used.  Instead, students will sketch their design onto a foundation fabric and proceed to fill in the design with fabrics of their choice.  Due to time constraints, students need to choose simple whimsical designs such as fish, butterflies or other bugs, lizards, suns and moons (with or without faces).  Realistic portraits, however, are too intense for this class.  You can check out samples and class information at www.susancarlson.com or her book “Freestyle Quilts: A No Rules Approach”.  If interested, please contact: Kay Bachkai (610-845-2781 or jkbachka@dejazzd.com as soon as possible to reserve a place.

Looking for Quilt Entries

http://drgnews.qtrop.com/sc.asp?a=9&q=6903&s=3373387&u=http://www.quilterstv.com If you like to enter quilts in juried shows, you might be interested in making a quilt for an unusual exhibition. Kentucky will host the World Equestrian Games in 2010, the first time the games have been held outside of Europe. In keeping with this event, The National Quilt Museum (Museum of the American Quilter's Society) in Paducah, Ky., is holding a juried exhibit of quilts about and/or depicting horses in early fall of 2010. For submission guidelines, please e-mail info@quiltmuseum.org and put "2010 horse exhibit" in the subject line. The deadline for submissions is Oct. 15, 2009. Go to QuiltMuseum.org for more information.

Commission for Quilt

I have a friend Terri Kunda who is looking for someone to finish a Bed Quilt that she started years ago.  It is a Queen/King Size and she has all material and batting to complete.  Many blocks are complete and quilted and the blocks need to be put together, have the bed drop added and bound and then quilted.  This was from a class at Country Quiltworks – Block at a time.  She can be reached at tenluv17@aol.com.  She lives in Malvern.  Please contact her if you are interested.
Thanks, Dottie Dolgash
