VFHQ News – August

Clips from Chris
Hats off to a great success at one of
my favorite quilt shows — Hershey Quilt Odyssey. Quilters are friendly people. I don’t think I met a single unhappy
quilter. Of course there are some things
that stress quilters, e.g., I have so much fabric so little time to play, and
oh those “UFO’s!” The feedback on our “Raffle Quilt” was
outstanding. The location that our dear friends, Barbara Wright & Candy Garrido obtained really paid off for our guild (they
practically went sleepless). We are all proud to display such a great piece of
art—our raffle quilt. Thank you to all
that made this quilt happen for us in such a short
time.

August Meeting: August 18, 2009
Get out of the heat and join us at the
August guild meeting where quilt judge, Judith Gunter will share with us “What
Judges See.” Judith Gunter is a NQA
Certified Judge, lecturer, teacher, and an award winning quilter. We’ll
learn about the standards judges use so we can improve our own quilting. Judith will also have plenty of examples to
share during her presentation. Her quilts
have been displayed at the International Quilt Show in Houston; the American
Quilter’s Society Quilt Show in Paducah, the Maryland State House, and numerous
local and regional shows. Judi’s work has also been published in Quilting
Today, Miniature Quilts, Patchwork Quilts, and Quilter's Newsletter
magazines. For more information about
Judith, visit http://quiltjudge.com/judging.html.
At this meeting, we will also vote on
our slate of officers:

Our Bees are open to all members of the
Valley Forge Homestead Quilters Guild.
They offer an opportunity to share quilting information and renew
friendships. We work on our own hand
projects (there’s not usually room for sewing machines); we assist each other
by suggesting ways to layout quilt blocks, work with colors, etc.; and we enjoy
each others company in a smaller venue.
Please check your calendar and see if you are able to join one or both
of the Bees this month. If you would
like to host one of the Bees, please contact Jean Hayden (Afternoon Bee) or
Beth Quigley (Evening Bee).

“My husband claimed "Heart and
Home" (86" x 108") as I was making the Log Cabin
blocks. He likes these colors and he helped choose the pineapple, a
favorite motif of ours, for the appliqué. Use any 6" block design
you like for the house blocks to give your quilt your own style. Heart
and Home was hand quilted by The Balls Mills Quilters.”

Fat Quarter Raffle
The current Fat Quarter Raffle drawing
will occur at September’s guild meeting.
The fabric theme for this time is Thimbleberries. To participate, simply bring a fat quarter,
place it in the designated basket, along with your name, and you’ll be eligible
for the drawing to win them all! You will receive one chance to
win for each fat quarter you contribute. The guidelines are simple:
1. The fabric must be a fat
quarter measuring 18" X 22".
2. It should be washed and
ironed
3. It must keep to the announced
theme
4.
It should be “quilt-shop-quality” fabric
Any questions, contact Jean Corday.
Welcome
Kim Bonanni is our newest member and she resides in Blue Bell,
PA. Susan Gustafson, her librarian and a
guild member, told Kim about us and our activities. Kim has taken some quilting classes at
Steve’s and has done some fusible appliqué.
She became interested in quilting about eight years ago when she read a
Jennifer Chiaverini book. Her favorite quilt projects are bed and lap
quilts that are mostly strip pieced, and she has made several bed-size
quilts. Besides quilting, Kim enjoys
reading historical fiction and riding her horse. Kim is a Reading Specialist at Penndale Middle School and a mom to four boys. Her three sons are 16, 12, and 5. The fourth son is a very active foster child
age two. The family also has a Great
Dane, an Irish Setter, two cats and a horse. We are very pleased to welcome Kim to VFHQ
Guild.
Retreat Time
Our 23rd Quilter's Retreat at Mensch Mill is scheduled for November 5-8, 2009. Cost is $145 per person Friday afternoon to
Sunday, includes 4 meals or $195 per person Thursday afternoon to Sunday, and
includes 7 meals. A $20 non-refundable
deposit will hold your space. Please do not ask me to modify a plan cost to fit
your personal needs. All remaining monies are due to Sally Rapp by October 10.

Something New Happening
Quilter's "Day" Retreat Weekend
For those who cannot stay overnight I
am offering a "day retreat" at Mensch Mill
Retreat Center in Berks County on Saturday, November 7, from 9:30 a.m. until 7
p.m. Cost will be $25 and includes lunch
at noon and dinner at 6 pm. You bring
your sewing machine and supplies to work on your own project. Irons and pressing mats provided. This will give you a preview of the
facilities for future retreats. I am
limiting this offer to the first 8 people who register by October 1st.
Transportation is on your own or perhaps the group could car pool. Further details will be available as interest
develops. Call Sally Rapp at
610-489-6892 to reserve your space.

Countdown to the Challenge: September 15, 2009
Black White + A
Zinger
About a month remains for us all to
complete our challenge projects. And,
there’s still time to start! Here are
the rules:
Use
black and white fabrics to make a quilted project and include no more than 25%
of one other color. This solid fabric or one that reads as a solid is
your “zinger.”
Use
any design or pattern, original or commercially available, and any construction
technique for your project. You may use components that are appliquéd,
pieced, embroidered, cross-stitched, painted, embellished, etc., or a combination
thereof.
You
must include with your submission a typed description of your challenge piece
(perhaps something intriguing about material, or an interesting occurrence
during the process, or a unique aspect of the design, or an unusual technique
you used, etc.). Your description should be between 50
to 75 words (no more than 100 words) using 12-point type (or standard
typewriter size), on a card or paper no larger than 8½ x 8½. (If you
don’t have access to a computer or typewriter, a neatly hand-printed
description will be acceptable.)
Your
creation can be any quilted item (including jacket, bag, etc.). The size of a quilted wall hanging should be
no larger than 50" on any given side.
Your
creation should be something made during the coming year (between 10/2008 and
9/2009).
As
usual, one entry per-person will be accepted.
Completed
challenge quilts will be displayed and voted on at the September guild meeting
in 2009.
All
questions regarding this challenge should be directed to Judy Snook 610.933-8094
or judyann112@comcast.net
Membership Renewal Time
Time to re-up! Membership renewal will start in August (at
the August meeting) and run through September.
Annual dues are $25. Please plan
accordingly and be ready to give your check or cash to the Membership Committee
at the August or September meeting OR mail your check to Nancy Hannum, 2652 Amy
Drive, Norristown, PA 19403. The
Executive Board and your Membership Committee appreciate your help in expediting
renewal – ours is a very active guild and we need everyone’s prompt action to
accomplish this by the October deadline.
Thanks!
Valley Forge Appliqué Group
The first meeting of the Valley Forge
Appliqué Group will take place the first Tuesday in September at the home of
Gloria Clark at 7:00 p.m. Anyone who does appliqué or would like to learn
to do appliqué is invited. We will be working only on appliqué projects—needleturn, freezer paper, and template techniques will be
used. Bring your project, or come and listen. We'll get you started
on an appliqué project. Let's share what we know.
Gloria Clark, gloriaquilts60@aol.com
50 - 50 with a Twist
At the July meeting Martha Klein took
the box as her first choice. The box contained Lizzie B pattern,
fabric and thread. She then went on to take half of the money,
$29.00. Chris Candello took home the other half of the money. Seems
like there is a pattern here: buy more than one ticket, win more than
once! So, buy your tickets for the last chance at 50-50 with a
Twist: 6 for $5 or 1 for a dollar.

September Meeting Preview
September 15, 2009
Our challenge quilts will be
displayed, voted upon, and ribbons presented.
(You have about a month remaining to finish your projects.) It’s important that you notify Judy Snook
now, 610-933-8094, if you plan to bring a challenge quilt (even if you’re not
yet positive that you’ll get it done, notify Judy) so we can gauge how many
quilt stands to set up for the evening.
As in the past, only one entry per member and next year’s challenge will
be revealed. We will also have our “4th”
giant fabric and quilting books sale. More
information about the sale follows this article.
Giant Fabric & Quilting Book Sale
September 15, 2009
Clear out your unwanted fabric from
your stash – fabrics you liked when purchased, but that you now know are
probably not going to get used. Included
in the sale this year are any quilting books you may want to part with or
duplicates you may have. Why not sell
them at our September 18th meeting? All
monies realized will go directly back to you so that you can buy more new
fabric to replace what you just sold.
And remember – one quilter’s stash-trash is another quilter’s
treasure. So whether you’re bringing
fabric to sell or not, come prepared with cash for those treasures you’re sure
to find!
Here are the guidelines:
You
set the price
Each
piece of fabric, “package” of fabrics or quilting books must be clearly labeled
with:
- your name
- price you are asking
- yardage or size of fabric (not for
books)
Put
all this information on a removable label or tag so when the buyer goes to pay
at the cashier table it can be recorded on the “sellers” sheet.
You
may also sell kits, completed tops or orphan blocks. (PLEASE no U.F.O.s”.) All items or packages must be labeled like
above.
Pre-register
your name with Sally Rapp (610-489-6892) by Saturday, September 12, 2009 if you
plan to sell fabric. Since we have to
plan the set-up in advance, only names registered will be given table space at
the September meeting.
Buyers
need to pay in cash, so come prepared.
Bring
your own shopping bag to take home your purchases.
We hope this will give members an
opportunity to earn some money for themselves while cleaning out your fabric
stash or quilting books to make room for more.
If you have questions, please call
Sally Rapp or Gloria Clark. Members who
wish to participate must notify Sally before Saturday, September 12, 2009. Members who don’t sign up or notify Sally
will not have a space.
Comfort Quilts
The comfort quilt committee is in
need of boys and men’s theme fabric. What I am looking for is 1 - 2
yard cuts of fabric. I found a couple of great comfort
quilt patterns that require cutting on the WOF. My current supply
is mostly scraps and small pieces. I have a lot of kids, girls, and
women’s fabric, but not much for older boys and men. My main focus right
now is for the VA Hospital for delivery in the fall.
If you have some fabric you are
willing to donate, please bring it to the Guild meeting. It would be most
appreciated.
Call or e-mail with any questions -
Thanks.
- Jean Corday

we will be selling quilt raffle tickets.
Welcome: Chris
Candello welcomed all members including one new member, Kim Bonanni,
and one guest, Martine Green’s niece.

hosted by Patti Fulton; afternoon Bee on August 11th at 12:30 p.m. will be
hosted by Gloria Clark.
Fat Quarter Raffle: Jean Corday
displayed a quilt she had made from Thimbleberries fat quarters. We will vote on a theme for strips for the
last quarter. Jean reminded everyone
that the July, August and September Quarter fabric will be Thimbleberries.
Comfort Quilts: Jean Corday has
comfort quilt patterns and strip kits available. Jean suggested that these quilts can be made
from charm packs also. Jean also has
surgical doll kits available. Contact
Jean if you need supplies.
Workshops: Jean Hayden reminded everyone that Barbara
Lenox will do a plaid workshop on August 22nd at Latter Day Saints Church in
Trooper from 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The
cost will be $35.00; supply list available upon payment. You will need ½ yard of a light, medium and

place an order with Steve for these items.
On September 26th at Latter Day Saints Church in Trooper from 9 a.m. to
4:00 p.m., Barbara Persing will do a strata workshop
based on her program in the spring. The

is available at JoAnn’s. Following October’s Guild Meeting, on
Wednesday, October 21st, Betty Neff will do a log cabin appliqué Hearts &
hands workshop also at Latter Days Saints Church in Trooper. The cost will be $25.00 plus $8.00 for the
pattern.
November Retreat: See Sally Rapp for reservations.
Door Prizes: Laura Chaplar, Barb Jones and Carol
Dilks.
BOM: Winner—Kate Sevensky.
AccuQuilt die cutter:
Chris Candello discussed VFHG purchasing this cutter, which could be
used for comfort quilts, boutique kits, binding and sashings. It would be a time-saving and precision
tool. There would be a minimal charge
for members. The Studio Fabric Cutter
model is approximately $1,600 and comes with 8 dies. It was suggested that because of the
complexity of this cutter, possibly two members (a board member and comfort
quilt chair person) would operate and store this cutter. More discussion will be available at the next
meeting. For more information, go to www.accuquilt.com.
Program: Ice cream social and Halloween in July. Ice cream and toppings were available. Thanks to Donna Raymond who shopped for the
ice cream! Beth Quigley distributed
directions for our Halloween projects (printed on orange paper in keeping with
the theme). Halloween silhouette
patterns (cat/bat/witch/scarecrow) were explained and demonstrated. Suggested projects were a wall-hanging,
pillow, tote bag. Samples were
displayed. finished
blocks were exhibited.
50/50 With a Twist: Winners: Martha Klein won twice –
she took the box the first time, and then took the envelope with $29.00. Chris Candello was the third winner and also
received an envelope with $29.00.
Lost & Found: Please check for items left behind from
previous meetings/workshops.
Guild Legal Status Report & Report of Nominating Committee:
Lou Chandler updated the Guild on the current progress of our legal
status project. Lou then reported on the
efforts of the nominating committee by announcing the 2009-11 slate of board
nominees: Secretary—Jean Corday; Treasurer—Candy Garrido;
Membership—Nancy Hannum; Vice-President—Marge Quinn; President—Chris
Candello. Candidates gave a very brief
introduction. Although the VFHG By-laws
state that terms will be two years, because the non-profit status still in
progress, the committee suggested that Chris Candello continue as president for
another two year term. A motion was made
that we temporarily suspend that portion of the bylaws.,
which was approved by a show of hands.

Meeting Adjourned: 9:55 p.m.
