VFHQ News – December 2009

Clips from Chris

Happy Holidays to all.  Hopefully you had time to enjoy our great quilting hobby over Thanksgiving weekend!  I wanted to share the great news of the charity quilt I made for my nephew’s school… it raised one thousand dollars…wow!  In the back of my mind I thought this was such a simple design are they crazy to pay so much for one night of fund raising for this primitive quilt. The more I thought about it as I heard the bidding, it made me realize family will do almost anything to savor the moments of life.  With that thought, I hope you are all able to do so as well, sit back enjoy life, family, friends and of course quilting!
- Chris

Welcome

Sally Chillington lives in Norristown and heard about us from Steve’s and from having attended our quilt show.  She graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in Home Economics which she taught for twenty-eight years.  While living in North Carolina, she began quilting in 1991 but learned to sew as a child from her grandmother.  Her interest in quilting began with a quilting class she took which was meant to be a “stress reliever”.  Sally has always enjoyed hand crafts and does cross-stitching and embroidery.  Sally has made a bed-size quilt and when not quilting she enjoys swimming, bowling and reading.  Sally does not currently work outside the home but is busy with her two sons, four stepchildren, six grandchildren and many foster children and their children. Welcome, Sally!

From a New Member

Hi Chris and VFQ members
I want to thank all the members who so generously offered their advice, tips and expertise at the November meeting.  It was a fun meeting, a great way to meet more people, learn something new, or brush up on something you have not done in awhile.  But it was very kind of those that worked each of the tables to share and help the rest of the quilting members.

I am a little timid about making the BOM or rather the "block of week!" but with all the help offered from Beth and Sally, I am sure I will be off to a great start.  Now... to start the fabric shopping!!
See you at the next meeting -Mary Molettiere

Simply Charming

The new chair of the Fat Quarter Raffle, Jacqui Santangelo, is mixing it up this time.  The current raffle theme for the next 2 guild meetings will be "Simply Charming" To participate, bring in a "quilt-shop quality" Charm Pack, place it in the designated basket, along with your name and you'll be eligible for the drawing to win them all! along with your choice of a free charm pack pattern. You will receive one chance to win for each charm pack you contribute.  Number of charm packs will determine how many winners.  Drawing will be held at the December guild meeting.  Any questions, contact Jacqui Santangelo

Earn Money for Our Guild

Our guild earns money from the grocery store rebate program through Redner’s Warehouse Markets Save-A-Tape Program and from eScrip merchants including Genuardi’s and Macys.  (ACME is in the process of re-evaluating their program which has prevented us from continuing this program with them.)

Redner’s Warehouse Markets Sav-A-Tape Program - 1% of what members spend at Redner’s is rewarded to the guild.  Members need to sign up for the SAV-A-TAPE at their local Redner’s.  They will receive a plastic card that should be scanned each time they make a purchase.  The receipt should be brought to the next guild meeting and placed in the container labeled “Redners”.  This is located on the information table at each meeting.

Genuardi’s and other merchants such as Macy’s participate in the eScrip program which our guild is a participating group.  Members need to register their grocery club card and your debit/credit card(s).  Do this by logging on to http://www.escrip.com/  and go to “sign up.”

Our guild is registered as:  Valley Forge Homestead Quilters Guild and our group ID #149032240.  Just enter the group ID at the sign up page and enter your Genuardi’s Club card number.  If you wish, you can also register debit/credit cards and local credit cards such as Macy’s.  Each time you shop at Genuardi’s or other participating merchants and use your Club Card or debit/credit card, the guild earns money.  It is all automatic…no collecting of receipts.

However, you must renew your registration each year by November 1.  So, if you haven’t renewed, please click here http://www.escrip.com/ and click on “YES RENEW”.  If you don’t have access to a computer, you can also fill out one of the forms on the information table and give to Candy Garrido who is responsible for this program.

Any questions regarding either program can be directed to Candy Garrido (candygarrido@verizon.net) or 215.256.7989.

50 - 50 with a Twist

The November winner of 50-50 With a Twist game, Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? was Jacqui Santangelo.   By knowing that Judy Snook won the sewing machine that was donated by Steve's Sewing Center, Jacqui took home $33.00 and a small gift.  Jacqui even did the twist for the guild.  The remaining names went into the Survivor bag.  Remember, this prize will be awarded at the August meeting.  Play December's 50-50 for a chance to win money for your stash!  Tickets are $1 for one or $5 for six.
- Kate Sevensky, Sally Lightcap and Nancy Hannum

Comfort Quilt Thank Yous

From SE Veterans Center:

Dear Jean,
On behalf of the Southeastern Veterans Center residents and staff, I wish to express our sinker appreciation for the quilts.  Right after you left a resident with his daughter came down and he was cold.  Guess what? He was the first to get a quilt.

Your contribution has most certainly further enhanced the programs and services provided to the residents at Southeastern.

We are extremely grateful for your continued loyalty, commitment and support.  Once again, thank you for your dedication to “Serve Those Who Have Served”.
-Ken Iiams, Volunteer & Resource Coordinator

From St. Christopher’s:

Thank you for all the quilts and all the dolls, for all your time that you have given to do all the work for our hospital.
Thanks -Barbara Liccio

January Meeting Preview – January 19, 2009

When Jean Hayden and I saw Terry Kramzar's quilt entitled "Leaves" at Quilt Odyssey, we noted how unique the construction was.  Well, then and there, we decided that we would invite her to our guild to show us how she does it.  At our January meeting you will meet fiber artist Terry Kramzar.  She will present a trunk show of her quilts and demonstrate the technique used in making "Leaves."  You may view some of Terry's designs at www.terrykramzar.com.

Antique Quilts in Harrisburg, PA

In late November, seven guild members spent the day at the State Museum of PA in Harrisburg, not wandering the three floors of varied exhibits but working in the fourth floor archival storage area of the Community & Domestic Life Collections.  Guided by Kathy and Rose, experienced museum volunteers from the La Tort Quilters of Carlisle, we assisted in the packaging of vintage quilts for storage.  Beatrice Hulsberg, curator of the Community & Domestic Life Collections, described to us the extensive precautions taken to preserve these fragile textiles.  As each quilt was spread out on an over-sized table, we would ooh and aah as we got to examine each piece close up. The quilts were covered with lightweight, acid-free paper so that, after folding, fabric would not touch other fabric in any area of the quilt.  They were then refolded on different crease lines, with a ‘tube’ of batting tucked in along each new fold line.  Quilts were then placed in lined, acid-free boxes, labeled and then placed on shelving in a large walk-in cold room.

It was a very special day that we all enjoyed immensely.  And the entire trip home was filled with recollections of the beautiful designs we’d seen, each choosing our favorites and marveling at the unique experience we’d shared!
- Linda Hamel

Thanks from Mensch Mill

Dear Quilters:
Thank you for being more than just a group using our facilities.  Thank you for being a part of our camping community.  I mean it with all sincerity when I say it is always a pleasure when you visit us.  Your quilts are simply lovely and we thank you for donating them to the lodge, making it cozier and homier.  -Michael Lenhart
