VFHQ News – February 2009
Clips from Chris
It is funny how history repeats itself…this
time last year we were saying what a great Lady’s Bag day workshop! I truly don’t mean to sound like a broken
record but our 2009 bag day was a true winner,
a fun productive day by all that attended and best of all, the bags were
great! Then onto wishing for snow…well
it sort of came true but it turned to ice, but I figured that works for me—when
the call came in from my employer closing the office due to inclement weather, almost
all of my dreams came true. I was a
little bummed for a split second thinking, what am I going to do, it is 6 am
and I am showered, dressed for success, hmmm…then a special light went on
(thank you Ott…) and I am proud to say I am now ready for my king size weaver
fever quilt. All 35 strip sets are ready for additional cutting. Happy sewing!
- Chris
February Meeting: February 17, 2009
Our special guest for February is
Barbara Persing who has been sewing and quilting for over 25 years. In 2000, she wanted to change her working
situation and started her own business providing Longarm Machine Quilting
services. In the last year she again has undertaken a new business. In
addition to her Longarm Quilting business, her sister Mary Hoover and she
started a pattern company called 4th & 6th Designs. Mary lives in NY and
owns a quilt shop but she and Barbara collaborate daily on designs and ideas.
Visit www.4and6designs.com to see their designs. In her spare time, Barbara works on her own
quilts. Please join us as Barbara talks
about her quilts, her business and her patterns. Bring your cash as she will also be selling
her patterns. Check out her web site:

Our
Bees are open to all members of the Valley Forge Homestead Quilters Guild. They offer an opportunity to share quilting
information and renew friendships. We
work on our own hand projects (there’s not usually room for sewing machines);
we assist each other by suggesting ways to layout quilt blocks, work with
colors, etc.; and we enjoy each others company in a smaller venue. Please check your calendar and see if you are
able to join one or both of the Bees this month. If you would like to host one of the Bees,
please contact Jean Hayden (Afternoon Bee) or Beth Quigley (Evening Bee).

WANTED: Pillowcases
At the Comfort Quilt Workshop on
February 28, I will give a demo and written instructions to anyone interested
in making 3-Seam Pillowcases (very easy once you learn the trick) for donation
to either the ConKerr Cancer kids (can be dropped off at Steve's) OR to
Children's Hospital & St. Christopher's Hospital (can be given to me).
I have 2 grandchildren with cystic fibrosis (another chronic, life-threatening
disease than can be very debilitating) and my step-daughter (who has spent a
lot of time with these kids in the hospital) has joyfully agreed to deliver
them to nursing stations to be given out to kids who need something to cheer
them up. My grandkids LOVE the ones I make for them and take them
everywhere, including sleepovers. The nurses would love to have a stock
to hand out. See you there!

Fat Quarter Raffle
The
current Fat Quarter Raffle drawing will occur at March’s guild meeting. The fabric theme for this time is batik.
To participate, simply bring a fat quarter, place it in the designated
basket, along with your name, and you’ll be eligible for the drawing to win
them all! You will receive one chance to win for each fat
quarter you contribute. The guidelines are simple:
1.
The fabric must be a fat quarter measuring 18" X 22".
2.
It should be washed and ironed
3.
It must keep to the announced theme
4. It should be “quilt-shop-quality” fabric
Any
questions, contact Jean Corday.
Cash for Stash aka Deal or No Deal
Deal or No Deal made its second
appearance at the January meeting. When
Beth Quigley's name was pulled, we all knew that she would take the cash
($22.00), even without asking her! Some lucky winner will receive this prize
later in the year. This will be the last month that we will play Deal or No
Deal. Get your tickets for a $1.00 each
and join the fun.

Welcome
Heather Lawson of Linfield, PA heard about us at
Thimbleberries Club at the Generation Quilt Shop and from our president, Chris
Candello. Heather started sewing when
she was ten thanks to her grandmother.
She started quilting in High School.
When she happened to see a picture of a mariners compass quilt, she
figured since she could sew, how hard could this quilt be! It took her five years to piece it! Heather likes quilt projects that teach her
new techniques. She has completed
several (10) bedsize quilts but also enjoys knitting, counted cross-stitch,
general sewing, cooking and scuba.
Heather is employed as a project manager for a pharmaceutical firm. Welcome, Heather!
Our Guild pamphlet has done its works
as it attracted Theresa Martini to our guild.
Theresa lives at Pin Oak Court and found out about us at Steve’s Sewing
& Vacuum Center. She has been sewing
off and on since grade school. She has
become more involved with quilting in the past two-three years. Theresa is still learning various techniques
and enjoys trying new things. She has
made a twin size bed quilt. Learning
various fabric art techniques and rubber stamping are some of Theresa’s other
interests. Theresa is a registered nurse
who works in a pharmaceutical company.
She recently purchased an HQ16 and is still learning mid-arm
quilting. Theresa has a dog named
Lucy. Theresa, we’re glad to have you as
a new member.
Mary Matcovich also learned about us from Steve’s
Sewing & Vacuum Center. Mary resides
in King of Prussia and has been sewing since she was a little girl. She started with a box of scraps from a
neighbor. She hand stitched Barbie doll
clothes on the back picnic table. When
she was 10 years old, her mother signed her up for sewing glasses at a Singer
Sewing store. The machine she learned on
only did straight stitching but she went on to study fashion design at Drexel University. Her interest in quilting started in March
2008 when she attended a professional meeting at Pennridge HS. She learned that Alex Anderson would be at
Valley Forge Convention Center and decided to go. The teachers at Pennridge had their students
participating in quilts for kids. Mary
wanted to know more. Mary likes quick
quilt projects, strip quilting and easy quilts.
She has yet to complete a bed-size quilt. Mary loves to travel, entertain, sew, meet
new people, create interiors especially her own. Mary is a Family & Consumer Science
Teacher (Home Economics). She has three
boys: Joe (1989), Matt (1992), and Christian (1994). Mary met her husband, Bob, at Drexel and they
married on May 2, 1987. Mary, welcome to
our guild.
Steve’s and our guild pamphlet was how
Lynn
Radliff found out about VFHQ Guild.
Blue Bell is where Lynn lives and she has been quilting since 1986. Lynn owns a HQ16 Machine and frame since 2003
and loves to piece quilt tops. Lynn
admits to us that she is not very good at appliqué. Her interest in quilting started when a
friend signed her up for a class and she’s been hooked ever since. Lynn enjoys making charity quilts especially
Quilts of Valor and quilts for kids with cancer. She also like making memory quilts with
T-shirts. Reading, camping and travel of
any kind are Lynn’s other interests.
Lynn is a nurse in a research pharmaceutical firm. Happily married, Lynn has four daughters and
nine grandchildren. Welcome, Lynn!
Congratulations!
Vickie Lopresti won honorable mention
in the Potluck Category for her quilt, “Smokey Bear” at the Peddler’s Village
22nd Annual Quilt competition and display.
Way to go, Vickie!
