VFHQ News – July 2009

Clips from Chris

Our June picnic was a great event! Great food, great friends and a great speaker.  Mimi Dietrich was very entertaining both as a speaker as well as our workshop instructor.  I can’t wait until our next meeting to see all of the show and tell projects… there were many near completion at the end of the workshop day.

Now as I prepare for our Halloween in July project, I think how appropriate it is for a summertime project.  It’s quick, easy and allows us to play with fabric.  Best of all, July’s meeting will allow us an opportunity to socialize with friends new and old.  See you soon.  - Chris

July Meeting:  July 21, 2009

Join us for our annual Ice Cream Social and instead of Christmas in July we will have Halloween in July.  Chris Candello and Beth Quigley will show us how to make Halloween Silhouettes. These appliqué silhouettes can be made into pillows, wall hangings or into a larger quilt.

Supply List for Halloween silhouette project

The fabric specified below is adequate to complete two blocks, additional fusible will be available for purchase if you prefer to do more than two silhouettes – they can make a neat wall hanging or table runner.

2 fat quarters – (1) black solid & (1) contrast fabric (batiks work well)

Sharpie or pencil for tracing on paper

Fabric pencils (for tracing on darker fabric)

Compass (don’t stress other may share)

Scissors (scissors you won’t mind cutting thru fused fabric)

Ironing sheet to prevent fusible from sticking to iron

Fusible web will be provided by guild

Lost & Found

Do these items belong to you?

Left at a workshop:  Blue Duraheal cutting mat – 17” by 24” – looks brand new, no name.

Left at a guild meeting:  White Farberware Arbor Life plate.  It has butterflies around the perimeter of the dishwasher safe/microwave safe plate.

If either of these items belong to you, please contact Cathy Fennell via email or telephone.   There will be a lost & found area at the guild meeting.

Countdown to the Challenge: Three months to go

There’s still time to come up with a winner.  Entries will be exhibited and voted on at our September meeting.  Here are the rules:

Black White + A Zinger

Use black and white fabrics to make a quilted project and include no more than 25% of one other color.  This solid fabric or one that reads as a solid is your “zinger.”

Use any design or pattern, original or commercially available, and any construction technique for your project.  You may use components that are appliquéd, pieced, embroidered, cross-stitched, painted, embellished, etc., or a combination thereof.

You must include with your submission a typed description of your challenge piece (perhaps something intriguing about material, or an interesting occurrence during the process, or a unique aspect of the design, or an unusual technique you used, etc.).  Your description should be between 50 to 75 words (no more than 100 words) using 12-point type (or standard typewriter size), on a card or paper no larger than 8½ x 8½.  (If you don’t have access to a computer or typewriter, a neatly hand-printed description will be acceptable.)

Your creation can be any quilted item (including jacket, bag, etc.).
The size of a quilted wall hanging should be no larger than 50" on any given side.
Your creation should be something made during the coming year (between 10/2008 and 9/2009).

As usual, one entry per-person will be accepted.
Completed challenge quilts will be displayed and voted on at the September guild meeting in 2009.

All questions regarding this challenge should be directed to Judy Snook 610.933-8094 or judyann112@comcast.net

Fat Quarter Raffle

The current Fat Quarter Raffle drawing will occur at September’s guild meeting.  The fabric theme for this time is Thimbleberries.  To participate, simply bring a fat quarter, place it in the designated basket, along with your name, and you’ll be eligible for the drawing to win them all!   You will receive one chance to win for each fat quarter you contribute.  The guidelines are simple:

1.  The fabric must be a fat quarter measuring 18" X 22".

2.  It should be washed and ironed

3.  It must keep to the announced theme

4.  It should be “quilt-shop-quality” fabric

Any questions, contact Jean Corday.

Comfort Quilts

Please let me know if anyone needs backing, batting, or labels for comfort quilts you might be working on.  If you need batting or backing cut, send me an e-mail or phone with the size and color theme and I will be happy to get it ready for you.   Our fellow member Joanne Thomas donated some lovely large backing pieces so I have a good supply right now.

Also, if you've pieced any tops and are not comfortable with the quilting bring them in to the guild meeting and I will get them quilted.

Don't forget if you have any orphan blocks, we will be happy to take them and incorporate them into a comfort quilt.  -Thanks, Jean

More Summer Reads

Book reviews by our own professional librarian

Quilty as Charged: Undercover in a Material World written by Spike Gillespie is a series of interviews with famous quilters and quilt teachers.  Spike is not a quilter but takes on the challenge of learning to quilt and learning about show-winning quilters as well as traveling to quilt shows, in particular, Houston’s International Quilt Fest.  This is her journey into quilting and the quilting world, it will bring back memories for each of us as she not only pieces her first quilt but also, pieces together the tales of many quilters.

If you are a mystery reader, a quilter and a lover of cats, The Cat, the Quilt and the Corpse by Leann Sweeney is for you.  As I have admitted before, I’m not a mystery lover but if quilting is involved, I’ll read it.  This story is about a quilter, Jillian, who is trying to rebuild her life after the sudden death of her husband.  She makes and sells quilts for cats.  She is the proud owner of three lovable cats but also prizewinning cats.  She returns from a trip to a quilt show to find that one of her cats has been stolen.  Jillian decides her cat was stolen by a local man and goes to confront him only to find him murdered.  There’s lots of suspense, lots of quilting and cat fun, also romance.

Sandra Dallas’ newest book is called Prayers for Sale.  Sandra gives us a fascinating story about 86-year-old Hennie Comfort and her friendship with 17-year-old Nit Spindle.  Hennie is about to move in with her daughter away from Colorado when she befriends Nit. She realizes that she can share her stories of the “past” with Nit as Nit will tell these stories to others to keep the history of the small mining town they live in alive.  The other thing that brings these two unusual people together is their love of quilting.  Hennie shares her stories as well as her quilting skills with Nit.  This is a fascinating story of different generations in a Colorado mining town during the depression and the interesting life Hennie lived. - Cathy Fennell
