VFHQ News – June 2009

Clips from Chris

As I turn the page of my day planner to June, I thought for a split second, boy am I busy this month.  My hubby is going to go into his sad missing his spouse mode, I guess I will just have to be that picture perfect wife… work extra hours, cook his favorite meals, clean and be his personal slave (only kidding, but it sounded really good).  But we do we have a lot going on with Lady’s night out, Mimi Dietrich speaking at our meeting,  a workshop by Mimi  teaching us many of her new techniques of quilting and best of all our annual picnic. So, ladies, get ready here comes June!  Happy quilting and I look forward to seeing you all soon.
- Chris

Welcome

Ellen Kirkner who resides in Lansdale, PA and heard about the guild through member Gail Forster has recently joined our guild.  Ellen took her first sewing class at age twelve and made a dress.  In 1981, she took her first quilting class in a private home and loved it.  She thinks she took the quilting class in 1981 because she had lost her job and decided to do something fun.  The quilt projects she enjoys most are the ones that she finishes.  Ellen has not completed a bed-size quilt.  Besides quilting, she enjoys reading, traveling, biking, politics, gardening and Wii bowling.  Ellen is a dental hygienist and has two grown children, Michael and Stefanie.  They also have a golden doodle named Lady and a cockapoo called Beau.  Welcome, Ellen.

Having viewed our quilt show and participated in a class taught by one of our members, Susan Dryburgh has become a member of the guild.  Susan lives in King of Prussia and learned to sew in high school.  About three years ago when a friend suggested they take a class together is when she began quilting.  She completed the class project, a table runner and was hooked!  Susan has completed the top only of a bed quilt and enjoys reading and cross stitch.  She is a speech/language therapist and the mother of three children.  Susan has two sons, one out of college and one in his second year, and a daughter who will be a senior in high school.  Welcome, Susan.

Mysteries with a Little Quilting
Book reviews by our own professional librarian

If you enjoy reading mystery stories and enjoy quilting, Emilie Richards’ “Ministry is Murder” series is right up your alley.  Ms. Richards has written four, so far, murder mysteries that involve Aggie Sloane-Wilcox, the Emerald Springs, OH wife of a minister.  Aggie seems to always be involved in a murder case whether the body is on her front porch such as in Blessed is the Busybody or finding her foster sister dead in Let There Be Suspects.  Beware of False Profits involves Aggie in the murder of a member of her husband’s congregation who is often in New York City but for the wrong reasons.  Ms. Richards’ most recent book is A Lie is a Lie and Aggie happens on the dead body of the Hollywood celebrity who has come to Emerald Springs to judge a talent contest.  Aggie seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and since she is not a police officer, sometimes interferes with the local police detective who is supposed to find the murderer as it is his job.  The books are well-written and interesting.  You may ask but where’s the quilting?  There’s not much in the first two books but there is some as Aggie’s mom is a quilter.  In the third book, Aggie’s mom moves to Emerald Springs and opens, of all things, a quilt shop.  I’m not big on mysteries but these are great fun; and the little bit of quilting helps make them well worth the read.  Enjoy!
- Cathy Fennell

50 - 50 with a Twist

50/50 With a Twist - Progressive Pot collected $82.30 and the winner was Maxine Close. Maxine was the last lucky winner of the progressive 50-50.  In June there will be three winners of the contest. Two winners will share the money 50-50 and the third winner gets the box.  Keep buying the tickets; $1 for one, 6 for $5.00.  Good luck!
- The Sisters, Kate and Nancy and their quilting friend, Sally

Fat Strip Quarters Raffle

The current Fat Quarter Raffle drawing will occur at June’s guild meeting.  The fabric theme for this time is floral.  To participate, simply bring Fat Strip Quarters.  The strips should be 2 ½” WOF – floral fabric.  For every 3 strips brought in (equaling approximately 7 ½” of fabric), you are eligible for one entry.  Place them in the designated basket, along with your name, and you’ll be eligible for the drawing to win them all!   The winner’s name will be pulled in June along with an extra prize.   The guidelines are simple:

1.  The strips should 2 ½” Width of Fabric (WOF)

2.  It must keep to the announced theme

3.  It should be “quilt-shop-quality” fabric

Any questions, contact Jean Corday.

I have a friend Terri Kunda who is looking for someone to finish a Bed Quilt that she started years ago.  It is a Queen/King Size and she has all material and batting to complete.  Many blocks are complete and quilted and the blocks need to be put together, have the bed drop added and bound and then quilted.  This was from a class at Country Quiltworks – Block at a time.  She can be reached at tenluv17@aol.com.  She lives in Malvern.  Please contact her if you are interested.
Thanks, Dottie Dolgash

Keystone Quilters Sponsors Susan Carlson
A three-day Workshop

Join the Keystone Quilters on July 13, 14, and 15, 2009 in Quakertown, PA for Susan’s newest class (Cutting Loose).  It combines aspects of her earlier classes with her evolving techniques of fabric collage.  In this class, she demonstrates a looser approach to the piecing and assembly of a wall quilt.  Emphasis will be placed on the collage piecing process.  Patterns or templates will not be used.  Instead, students will sketch their design onto a foundation fabric and proceed to fill in the design with fabrics of their choice.  Due to time constraints, students need to choose simple whimsical designs such as fish, butterflies or other bugs, lizards, suns and moons (with or without faces).  Realistic portraits, however, are too intense for this class.  You can check out samples and class information at www.susancarlson.com or her book “Freestyle Quilts: A No Rules Approach”.  If interested, please contact: Kay Bachkai (610-845-2781 or jkbachka@dejazzd.com as soon as possible to reserve a place.
