VFHQ News – March
2009
Clips from Chris
Thank you and hats off to all who
attended our Comfort Quilt charity workshop.
I am proud to be part of such a compassionate generous group. There was little time to relax (with Jean
Corday and Laura Chaplar cracking the whip), but as I sat back for a minute to
digest the activities of the day, I overheard and witnessed all of the hustle and
bustle of our venturesome quilters: teaching, demonstrating, helping young and
not so young, and, in the end, producing quilts. After a six-hour day of quilting with 40
members, friends and family we were able to produce close to 50 comfort
quilts. A job well-done by all who
participated, and special thanks goes to our friend Jean Corday and her
committee for coordinating this great day!
- Chris Candello

Our
Bees are open to all members of the Valley Forge Homestead Quilters Guild. They offer an opportunity to share quilting
information and renew friendships. We
work on our own hand projects (there’s not usually room for sewing machines);
we assist each other by suggesting ways to layout quilt blocks, work with
colors, etc.; and we enjoy each others company in a smaller venue. Please check your calendar and see if you are
able to join one or both of the Bees this month. If you would like to host one of the Bees,
please contact Jean Hayden (Afternoon Bee) or Beth Quigley (Evening Bee).

Fat Quarter Raffle
The
current Fat Quarter Raffle drawing will occur at March’s guild meeting. The fabric theme for this time is batik.
To participate, simply bring a fat quarter, place it in the designated
basket, along with your name, and you’ll be eligible for the drawing to win
them all! You will receive one chance to win for each fat
quarter you contribute. The guidelines are simple:
1.
The fabric must be a fat quarter measuring 18" X 22".
2.
It should be washed and ironed
3.
It must keep to the announced theme
4. It should be “quilt-shop-quality” fabric
Any
questions, contact Jean Corday.
50 - 50 with a Twist
Denny Shaw made the deal and took the
box and said "There's nothing in here!" After closer
inspection, she discovered a bag full of surprises. Her prizes included a
selection of black and white fabrics from Steve's, the book, A Black &
White Garden by Kay M. Capps Cross, thread, money for a zinger and the
directions for the quilt guild challenge. She was excited! The
50-50 money will go into our jackpot for another lucky winner. This
month, 50-50 takes a new twist, Progressive. We will explain this new
game at the meeting. Purchase your tickets for $1.00 each or with a
twist, 6 for $5.00. Good luck!

that we use:

Jean Corday, Comfort Quilts

Welcome
Our guild flyer at Steve’s was how
Lynn Radliff found out about VFHQ Guild.
Blue Bell is where Lynn lives and she has been quilting since 1986. Lynn has owned a HQ16 Machine and frame since
2003 and loves to piece quilt tops. Lynn admits to us that she is not very good at
appliqué. Her interest in quilting
started when a friend signed her up for a class and she’s been hooked ever
since. Lynn enjoys making charity quilts,
especially Quilts of Valor and quilts for kids with cancer. She also likes making memory quilts with
T-shirts. Reading, camping and travel of
any kind are Lynn’s other interests.
Lynn is a nurse in a research pharmaceutical firm. Happily married, Lynn has four daughters and
nine grandchildren. Welcome, Lynn!
Meeting Minutes – February 17, 2009
Meeting Commenced: 7:00 pm
Welcome: Chris
Candello welcomed all members including three guests.
Sign Up Sheet:
Comfort Quilt Workshop sign-up.
BOM: Winner—Sandy Darlington. Laura Chapler, in Beth Quigley absence,
presented March’s block, an Eagle. If
anyone has questions regarding this month’s block, please call Beth.
Bees: Evening bee on February 24th at 6:30 p.m. –
Gloria Clark; afternoon bee in March – Shirley Horning.
Fat Quarter Raffle: The fabric for this quarter is
batiks. Jean Corday will draw the winner
at the March meeting. More batiks are
needed.
Comfort Quilts: Jean Corday gave instructions for labels
which can be found in the March Newsletter.
She suggested using a zigzag stitch to apply the label to the
quilt. Jean had her Comfort Quilt book
at the back table for review.
Comfort Quilt workshop: Scheduled for Saturday, February 28th at Good Shepherd from 9:30 to 4:00
p.m. You do not have to attend the full
day. There is no fee. The Guild will provide lunch and
beverages. This is a good chance to
practice machine quilting. Lisa Hudock
will be taking pictures. Donna LeBlanc
will have her serger machine set up for this workshop. She will be demonstrating three seam
pillowcases to be donated; they can be dropped off to Steve’s or to Judy
Snook.
Surgical caps for kids: Jean Corday has circle fabric and elastic for surgical caps for kids at
St. Chris’ Hospital. Twenty one surgical
dolls were delivered to St. Chris’ Hospital.
Door Prizes:
Vickie Lopresti, Cheryl McGuire (twice).
Workshops: Jean Hayden reminded the guild that charity
work is a part of our guild commitment.
March 28 – Weaver Fever – Shellie Blake will be the instructor; Shellie
brought sample fabrics and had a couple of quilts for display. She suggests that you pick your border fabric
first. March 14 is a tentative fabric
shopping date for this class. Cutting
instructions will be provided after the meeting tonight. Books will be available at the workshop; the
cost should be $7-10. April 21 Guild
meeting speaker will be Barbara Lenox who will give a presentation on plaids
and large scale prints. Barbara will
have a workshop on April 25 at Good Shepherd Church. Barbara Persing and Mary Hoover will have a
workshop on September 26.
Ricky Tims: You should have received an email
confirmation if you are going. See Chris
if you have not.
Girl Scout cookies: for sale – see Donna Raymond.
Tonight’s Program:
Barbara Persing and Mary Hoover presented their strata techniques and
displayed many of their quilts – some of which were the same pattern but
different colors – showing how color changes the look of a quilt. They entertained us with stories about behind
the scenes of putting together a book.
Books and patterns were available for purchase.
By-Laws:
Lou Chandler explained about updating our By-Laws in order to become a
non-profit, tax-exempt organization and some of the advantages of formalizing
our status. She thanked Gary (and
Martine) for taking VFHQ as a pro bono client to incorporate these
changes. The updated By-Laws should be
on the website under the Administration tab tomorrow for review. Please review as we will vote on these
changes at the next meeting in March.
Deal or No Deal:
Denny Shaw was the winner and took the box which contained money,
thread, black and white fabrics and a quilt book. She definitely got a ‘deal’.
MLK National Adoption Center: Joan Gunder and Jean Hayden shared
their experience at the MLK National Adoption Center service day where they
sewed squares (pictures of children to be adopted) into a quilt with the help
of students from Moore College of Art.

April Meeting Preview – April 21, 2009
Barbara Lenox will visit our guild and
present her topic - When You Work with a Plaid, the Plaid Works with You! She will explore the plaid profile – a combo
of characteristics determined by both grid type and color; purchasing and
prepping plaid fabric; and strategies for using plaid fabric.
Barbara Lenox is a quiltmaker who
teaches classic, traditional pieced patterns. She has been making quilts for
over 20 years. Her earliest “quilting” memory is reading Nancy Drew books under
the frame while her grandmother and great-aunt quilted. She and her husband
live in southeastern Pennsylvania near Amish Country. For more about Barbara, visit http://www.barbaralenox.com/
