VFHQ News – November 2009

Clips from Chris

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…RETREAT time!  I know you all thought I was going to say holiday time. Thanks to our friend, Sally Rapp, for all of her efforts in coordinating such a wonderful weekend for all of us retreat goers.  This is such a great time of year, brisk evenings, fall foliage and what better way to prepare for the holidays, sewing amongst friends.  I hope to have lots of show-n-tell come our November meeting.
- Chris

November Meeting – November 17, 2009

Would you like to learn a new quilting skill but not sure where to begin?  At our next guild meeting, we will have a round robin of mini-workshops to help you broaden your skills.  There will be 5 mini-workshops offered.  You will be choosing three of the five.  Your choices are as follows:

Appliqué with Gloria Clark and Linda Hamel

Hand quilting with Lou Chandler and Cathy Fennell

Machine quilting with Shellie Blake and Becky Weiland

          Accuquilt demonstration with Chris Candello

BOM presentation for 2010 with Sally Rapp and Beth Quigley

Plans for this meeting have been altered slightly from what was outlined in last-month’s newsletter.  Due to time constraints, rather than having a mix of demo and hand’s on workshops, all will be demos featuring techniques, tips, and tricks.

Appliqué Group

The applique group is going back to its original plan to meet on the first Tuesday of the month.  On Tuesday, December 1, we will meet at the home of Martine Green.  Martine's address is as follows:  477 Maynard Drive; Wayne, PA 19087.  Her phone number is 610-687-0854.

Welcome

Peggy Melachrinas took her first quilting class with Sally Rapp about fifteen years ago and recently a class with Chris Candello and that’s how she heard about VFHQ Guild.  Peggy lives in Collegeville and has been sewing since she was eight years old.  She took the class with Sally but seriously started quilting about four years ago.  Her grandmother was a quilter and she has always been interested  in quilting but recently has more time to invest in quilting now that the kids have gotten older.  Peggy loves stars, log cabin and other pieced quilts. She hasn’t done appliqué but would like to learn.  She machine quilt or has her quilts machine quilted but would like to work on her hand quilting.  Peggy has completed two bed-size quilts, one is king-size.  Her other interests are scrapbooking, knitting, and reading.  Peggy works part-time teaching a babysitting class for 4H.  Peggy has four children.  Her oldest child is married and lives in Florida.  Her daughter is teaching art at an international school in China.  Two children live at home, Matt who is fifteen and Sarah who is thirteen.  Peggy is also the grandmother of an adorable 18 month old grandson.  Recently, she had the opportunity to travel to China to visit her daughter and visited a quilt shop there where everything was pieced by hand.  Welcome, Peggy!

Did You Know?

Many textile names reflect their places of origin.  For instance, muslin is from Mussolo, the Italian name for the city of Mosul in modern Iraq where it was originally woven.  Calico originated in Calicut, a seaport in Southwest India.  Chambray and denim are both named after French towns.  (Quilters Newsletter, June/July 2009)
