VFHQ News – October
2009
Clips from Chris
It is so nice to hear how many depend
on their guild friends and activities to lift them up when they are down; and I
agree that without all of you and our many guild activities one could find
oneself feeling down and out. Some say
this is quilt therapy and, as the saying goes, “Quilting is cheaper than a
psychiatrist.” I can’t report that this
is totally true—I have seen some of your stashes! But equally valuable is our
quilter-to-quilter therapy. Thank
goodness for our quilting friends!

Our Bees are open to all members of
the Valley Forge Homestead Quilters Guild.
They offer an opportunity to share quilting information and renew
friendships. We work on our own hand
projects (there’s not usually room for sewing machines); we assist each other
by suggesting ways to layout quilt blocks, work with colors, etc.; and we enjoy
each others company in a smaller venue.
Please check your calendar and see if you are able to join one or both
of the Bees this month. If you would
like to host one of the Bees, please contact Jean Hayden (Afternoon Bee) or
Beth Quigley (Evening Bee).

Welcome
Barbara Bregman has become a member of our guild
through her sister, Laura Sypniewski, maybe we have
another sister act here. Barbara lives
in Silver Spring, MD and has been quilting for around 30 years with a great
interest in machine piecing, needle-turned hand appliqué and hand quilting. She’s always been interested in sewing, as a
child she made her clothes and clothes for her Barbie. Barbara started quilting in graduate school
and has been feeding her fabric addiction ever since. She enjoys many quilt projects and her latest
is a series of landscape quilts and a huge paper piecing project. She has made a bed-sized quilt and along with
quilting she enjoys gardening, kayaking, hiking, and reading. Barbara is currently working part time as a
neuroscience professor at Georgetown University and due to this she can finally
devote more time to quilting. Welcome,
Barbara!
Lisa Steuer
introduced Mary Molettiere to our guild. Mary met Lisa at a One Block Wonder class at
Byrnes Sewing and some of us met Mary at the Ricky Tims
Seminar. Mary lives in Lansdale, PA and
started sewing at 10 years of age in a 4-H class. Mary made a sampler quilt in 1989 and after
making two more bed size quilts, taking an appliqué class and then making a
machine-quilted wall hanging, she was hooked.
Having made five bed quilts, Mary is still searching for her favorite
quilt project. She reads and tries some
of everything and keeps building her stash, going to shows and taking
classes. She is always inspired but is
still searching for that favorite quilt style.
Besides quilting, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends,
traveling, reading, swimming, baking, watching old movies, and helping with
church activities. Mary works as a high
school secretary and has been married to her husband, Tom, for 32 years. They have two daughters Genevieve (28) and
Stephanie (26) as well as a pet Yorkie, named Shadow
who is 13 years old. Welcome, Mary!
Mary Stefanelli resides in Orkland,
PA and found our guild while surfing on the internet. She has been sewing since she was a child and
has been quilting for the last five years.
She got hooked on quilting when her friend helped her make a t-shirt
quilt. Patchwork, redwork,
and embroidery are the quilt projects she most enjoys and she has used those
skills to make a bed-sized quilt. When
not quilting, Mary enjoys biking, swimming and the beach. Mary works as a finance clerk. If she isn’t sewing, she is at the beach
probably sewing. Mary is the captain of
her company’s bike team for the American Cancer Society. Welcome, Mary!
A Challenge Night Report
The challenge turned out
terrific. There were 30 entries...and they looked wonderful spread out on
the quilt racks across the entire front of the room. Becky Weiland won
1st prize with a spectacular wall hanging (with golden yellow added) that
looked as if you were glancing down into a swirling cyclone. Deb Graves
came in 2nd with a very sweet, original design that featured 3 dimensional
penguins flying a purple kite. And 3rd place went to Donna LeBlanc who
had a very intricate star, triangle and square design using hot pink that
contained 1,300 pieces! The variety was amazing - from a very traditional
Grandmother's flower garden to a New York Beauty using orange, a jacket using
red and a purse with pink yoyos. Great fun! - Linda Hamel
VFHQ Challenge 2009/2010
The new CHALLENGE for 09/10 was
announced at our September meeting and it’s already generating some great
creative ideas. Here are the rules:
Three P’s – Petite, Plaid or Polka Dot
Use at least two of the three “P’s”
(you may use all three!) to make a quilted project.
Petite is defined as 20” or less on
any given side. If petite is NOT chosen
as a parameter of the design, then the size of a quilted wall hanging should be
no larger than 50" on any given side.
Plaid or polka dot fabric must be included
in at least 25% of the overall design whether used singly or in combination.
Use any design or pattern, original or
commercially available, and any construction technique for your project. You may use components that are appliquéd,
pieced, embroidered, cross-stitched, painted, embellished, etc., or a
combination thereof.
You must include with your submission
a typed description of your challenge piece (perhaps something intriguing about
material, or an interesting occurrence during the process, or a unique aspect
of the design, or an unusual technique you used, etc.). Your description should be between
50 to 75 words (no more than 100 words) using 12-point type (or standard
typewriter size), on a card or paper no larger than 8½ x 8½. (If you don’t have access to a computer or
typewriter, a neatly hand-printed description will be acceptable.)
Your creation can be any quilted item
(including jacket, bag, etc.).
Your creation should be something made
during the coming year (between 10/2009 and 9/2010).
As usual, one entry per-person will be
accepted.
Completed challenge quilts will be
displayed and voted on at the September guild meeting in 2010.
All questions regarding this challenge
should be directed to Judy Snook 610.933-8094 or judyann112@verizon.net
VFHQ Excursion
Hello members — The State Museum of
Pennsylvania, located in Harrisburg, has a collection of almost 200
quilts of various styles and techniques dating from the about 1800 to the
present. Prearranged group tours to view many of the quilts can
be set up on weekdays. The tours last about 45 min to 1 hour.
We are trying to assess interest for a guild bus trip to the
museum. Early November is the target time and the day of the
week will determined by majority member availability. There will be
a survey sheet at the October guild meeting to indicate your interest and
choice of weekday for the trip. If you are interested, but will not be at
the meeting, email Linda Hamel at dhamel1283@aol.com.
In addition, there is another unique
opportunity for quilt enthusiasts at the State Museum. The curator in
charge of the quilt collection said they are beginning a process of
repackaging all the quilts for storage in keeping with current methods of
preserving textiles. The last time this was done was in the 70's, so the
storage system needed to be updated. Right now the
entire collection is out, piled on tables. She was hoping that she
might get some assistance from guilds for this repackaging
process. Beginning in November, she would be interested in 8 -10 people
at a time to help with cataloging, folding and putting the quilts into
storage boxes. We could see and handle all the quilts that are
there. The work is done from about 10 -2 on weekdays. This
could be a really fun road trip - totally separate from the quilt tour
trip. The survey sheet at the guild meeting will have an area
to indicate interest for this trip also.
Here's the web site for the
collection: http://www.statemuseumpa.org/quilts05new/pages/home.htm
