VFHQ News –
September 2009
Clips from Chris
Wow...can you believe September has
arrived! This past week was a busy time; my boss left to serve our country
for military duty (fortunately only a 90 day tour), bee, Weaver Fever class,
workshop, longarm class, car show, niece purchased her first home – moving time,
construction & all that goes with new home purchases, plus the normalcy
(ha-ha) of everyday life. It truly is
amazing how fast time passes, as the saying goes…“Time fly’s when you’re having
fun.” I could agree with that saying if
only I could include SOME sewing, all of those blocks of the months I need to
catch up on, they have turned into block of the year! Take my advice relax and take time to sew,
its “quilt therapy” and we could all use a bit of that relaxation. Happy
Quilting!
- Chris
September Meeting - September 15, 2009
The quilts for this year’s challenge—“Black,
White and a Zinger”—will be displayed, voted upon, and ribbons presented. If you have a challenge quilt
you’re presenting, please bring it in a brown paper bag (with no
identification), no later than 6:30 PM to our meeting. Deliver it to the stage area-left. Cover your label, or leave it off your
quilt. Be sure to also bring your typed
description (75 words or less) explaining how you used the theme. It’s important that you notify Judy
Snook now, 610-933-8094, if you plan to bring a challenge quilt (even if you’re
not yet positive that you’ll get it done, notify Judy) so we can gauge how many
quilt stands to set up for the evening. (As usual, only one entry per member). Also, we will have our “4th” giant fabric
sale. Please see more information about
the sale in this newsletter.
Following all these festivities, next year’s challenge will be
revealed. Our challenge night is always
a delightful evening you won’t want to miss.

Our Bees are open to all members of
the Valley Forge Homestead Quilters Guild.
They offer an opportunity to share quilting information and renew
friendships. We work on our own hand projects
(there’s not usually room for sewing machines); we assist each other by
suggesting ways to layout quilt blocks, work with colors, etc.; and we enjoy
each others company in a smaller venue.
Please check your calendar and see if you are able to join one or both
of the Bees this month. If you would
like to host one of the Bees, please contact Jean Hayden (Afternoon Bee) or
Beth Quigley (Evening Bee).

Giant Fabric & Quilting Book Sale
September 15, 2009
Clear out your unwanted fabric from
your stash – fabrics you liked when purchased, but that you now know are
probably not going to get used. Included
in the sale this year are any quilting books you may want to part with or
duplicates you may have. Why not sell
them at our September 18th meeting? All
monies realized will go directly back to you so that you can buy more new
fabric to replace what you just sold.
And remember – one quilter’s stash-trash is another quilter’s
treasure. So whether you’re bringing
fabric to sell or not, come prepared with cash for those treasures you’re sure
to find!
Here are the guidelines:
You set the price
Each piece of fabric, “package” of
fabrics or quilting books must be clearly labeled with:
- your name
- price you are asking
- yardage or size of fabric (not for
books)
Put all this information on a
removable label or tag so when the buyer goes to pay at the cashier table it
can be recorded on the “sellers” sheet.
You may also sell kits, completed tops
or orphan blocks. (PLEASE no “U.F.O.s”.) All items
or packages must be labeled like above.
Pre-register your name with Sally Rapp
(610-489-6892) by Saturday, September 12, 2009 if you plan to sell fabric. Since we have to plan the set-up in advance,
only names registered will be given table space at the September meeting.
Buyers need to pay in cash, so come
prepared.
Bring your own shopping bag to take
home your purchases.
We hope this will give members an
opportunity to earn some money for themselves while cleaning out your fabric
stash or quilting books to make room for more.
If you have questions, please call
Sally Rapp or Gloria Clark. Remember, members
who wish to participate must notify Sally before Saturday, September 12,
2009. Members who don’t sign up or
notify Sally will not have a space.
Program Update
Hi Members,
We would like to thank those members
who provided so much input this year to our programs. Kathy Graff
suggested Barbara Lenox; Sally Rapp suggested Judi Gunter; and Chris Candello
and Beth Quigley suggested our October speaker and workshop leader, Betty
Neff. Several of you have suggested possible speakers that we could not
engage as yet because of conflicts in schedules or cancellations in agreements,
but we continue to try to schedule those individuals. Dawn Heefner
suggested our speaker for next June several years ago, and we were finally able
to coordinate schedules, etc. Barb Jones has given us several ideas
for next year, too. So, please feel free to continue suggesting speakers
you have heard or classes you have taken that you really enjoyed. We
never dismiss any idea from you, but be patient—most
speakers are scheduled a year in advance.
This is your guild, and we try to have
great variety in our presentations - not all traditional quilters and not
all contemporary quilters. We always aim for a mix. It has been my
experience that even though I think I may not like a specific technique, that
same technique has inspired me and brought me along new quilting paths.
Please keep in mind that when you
suggest a speaker from out of town, that speaker wants also to also do a
workshop the day following her/his presentation. We need you to support
that workshop. If you've noticed, when you take a workshop at the guild,
you pay half the price you would at a quilt shop or a quilt show.
In January we would like to make some
kind of penny rug on guild night. The guild will provide the
materials. And, as a bonus, our new Accu-Quilt
cutting system will provide circles already perfectly cut for us to use.
I don't know about you, but I think that cutting a perfect circle is not the
easiest thing to do.
Please call me at 610-687-1728 or
e-mail me at gloriaquilts60@aol.com with any suggestions.
Have fun quilting,
-Gloria Clark
Membership Renewal Time
Time to re-up! Membership renewal will occur at the

ready to give your check or cash to the Membership Committee at the September
meeting OR mail your check to Nancy Hannum, 2652 Amy Drive, Norristown, PA
19403. The Executive Board and your
Membership Committee appreciate your help in expediting renewal – ours is a

Member Comfort Quilts

overcome a serious difficulty her life.
Thank You!
Dear Friends,
Thank you to all for your
kindness, comfort, support and expressions of sympathy during the recent
passing of my husband, Tom, on August 19th. The donations to The Kidney
Fund are very much appreciated knowing that they will again help someone who
was in the same situation as Tom. I will be able to take each day as it
comes with the loving support of my VFHQ friends through 'quilt therapy'.
Sincerely,
Jacqui Santangelo

Quilter’s Remedy Quilt Shop Closes
Dear Customers,
Some of you have been asking us about
our last newsletter and what was said about our store staying open or
closing. Well, we all want an answer. We
have decided that closing is no longer an option but a must. There have been
some unforeseen circumstances that have led us to this decision. We are not
giving up but ultimately we are changing our business plan. We would like to
thank you for your ongoing support and we will greatly miss all of your faces
and great conversations. We have met so many great people and enjoyed
everyone’s company and inspiration. You all are what have kept us going this
long as. Unfortunately, we can no longer place the stress on ourselves and our
families. Our New Business Plan and what
this means for you: We will only be available by appointment, internet, or at
quilt shows (please check our website, blog, or call
us at 215-679-8170). We are sorry for the inconvenience this causes all of you.
We love the time we spend with our customers and you feel like friends. We love
helping you pick out fabric. Even though
we have to close the store front, Quilter’s Remedy is not going out of
business. We will still be available to you. Just go to our website and see
what shows we will be at and come visit us, order fabric from our website (if
you are local you can arrange a time to pick up at our new home), or call us
and we can arrange a time that you can come and look at the material we have.
Under our new plan, we will be focusing on kits, special cuts, fewer patterns, and
bolts, and no batting or notions.
We can still help you with your
colors. We want to stay in touch. As you can tell, this is hard for us, but the
financial burden has been making us ill. We hope that we will see you again
whether it be at the local grocery store or at an upcoming quilt show.
We are planning on being a vendor at
the upcoming Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza XVI Quilt show in Oaks
from September 17th-20th the shop will be CLOSED during the show. Sorry we are
unable to staff the show and our Red Hill Store shop at the same time. Thank
for understanding, see you after the show!
Thank you sincerely,
-Cindy Pedersen & Crystal Landis
