VFHQ News – February 2010
Clips from Chris
Now that
February has arrived (and we all experienced some snow), it appears that we are
all working towards our quilting goals. There’s a lot of quilt action happening
in our guild. I’ve seen great show and tells, tremendous progress with those UFO’s, and many
participating in the BOM. It is so hard to keep up with it all. I feel very confident that our 2010 Quilt
Show will be another great success (following which, maybe—and I mean maybe—our
dear friend and quilt show coordinator Jean Hayden might be able to rest). So let’s all continue the good work and keep
on quilting.

February Meeting – February 16, 2010
One of our
favorite quilt shop owners, Jackie Gauker, will be at
our February meeting to share her antique family quilts with us. Jackie has great stories and is a laugh a minute. Jackie will have terrific items to sell so
bring your cash and/or checkbook. Hope to see you there. For information about Jackie and her shop, visit
Quilters Palette, visit www.thequiltpalette.com.
NOTE: we
were just notified that the Good Shepherd church is having a function in the
Sanctuary the night of our meeting and they’re suggesting that we concentrate our
parking on the side of the auditorium where we meet, and we could also park
along the grass on the side driveway (from Henderson Rd.) if need be. The church is very good to us so let’s do all
we can to accommodate their needs on this night.

the winning quilts from that show will be on display until April 11 2010 at the

50 - 50 with a Twist
"Come
on down!" shouted the members of the Valley Forge Homestead Quilters
before Bob Barker could even think about saying it! Martha Klein and Lynn Radliff
took center stage and bid on an LG Steam Washer and Dryer set. Martha came closest without going over and
took home $30 in cash. Lynn took home
the quilted recipe box. It sounded like
the audience had a lot of fun.
The February
50-50 game will be Family Feud. If you
have not e-mailed me with your favorite time to quilt, please do so until the
morning of the meeting. I would like to
have 100 people surveyed. Tickets are
still $1 for one or 6 for $5. Please buy
your tickets early.
The new committee,
- Kate Sevensky,
Sally Lightcap and Nancy Hannum
Welcome
Debbie Bianco is a new member residing in Philadelphia. She found us through the link on Steve’s
webpage. She considers herself the queen
of UFOs and started sewing in grade school through classes given by Mrs.
Roberts at Sears. When asked how and
when she got interested in quilting, her answer was “must have been a full
moon!” She enjoys the quilt projects she
gets done which includes a bed-size quilt.
Debbie is a nurse practitioner at Children’s Hospital of
Philadelphia. She works long hours and
doesn’t get to quilt as much as she would like but joined the guild to
get/catch the quilting fever again. She
says she is already inspired after just one meeting. Welcome, Debbie!
Fat Quarter Raffle
The 3 “P”
Challenge – January,
February & March, 2010
In conjunction
with the VFHQ Challenge (September 2010), we have an opportunity to have an
incentive to get started on the Challenge project or add some fun fat quarters
to your stash with this quarter’s Fat Quarter Raffle. Bring in a fat quarter that is either PLAID, POLKA Dot or A FAT QUARTER THAT IS A COLOR
STARTING WITH THE LETTER “P”. When you
drop off your fat quarter, fill in the entry form with your name and as many
colors that start with the letter “P” that you can think of on the spot. No cheat sheets from the internet allowed.
In March,
one name will be drawn, and one entry form with most “P” colors will be the
winners.

AccuQuilt
Since we
have purchased the AccuQuilt, it has gotten much
use. Many members have taken advantage
of having items cut for their quilts, the Comfort Quilt committee has utilized
it in making kits, and Chris has become quite proficient at demoing
this wonderful invention. When we had
decided to purchase AccuQuilt, we realized that there
would be other dies that members would like us to purchase. Therefore, if a member is able to make a small
donation when they use the AccuQuilt, these funds
will be put into an account that will be used to purchase new dies and to replace
the plastic sliders that are needed and that do wear out. This is an optional donation. One need only
contact Chris to utilize the AccuQuilt. To see the other dies go to accuquilt.com and
click on Studio Dies on the toolbar.
Thanks for your support of the AccuQuilt.
Spring Is Coming and So Is “Retreat”
A $20
non-refundable deposit will hold your space for our 24th retreat at Mensch Mill Retreat and Conference Center in Berks
County. The balance is due by April 15th
to Sally Rapp.
The cost for
Thursday to Sunday is $190 and includes 7 meals and 3 nights lodging and the
Friday to Sunday is $145 and includes 4 meals and 2 nights lodging.
Openings are
still available. More detailed
information for our newer friends is available from Sally or talk to any member
who has previously gone to get a feel for the fun and good times enjoyed at our
retreats.

Our Quilt Show
Take a
moment right now to mark your calendar to make sure you don’t schedule a
vacation or anything else on the dates of our quilt show which will be held
October 22 and 23, 2010 at Good Shepherd
Lutheran Church, King of Prussia, PA. As
usual, we will check-in our quilts at our October 19, 2010 guild meeting. The set-up for the event will be October 21
(after 12-noon). Please remember that
all members are needed to help with this event so when the sign up sheets come
around to help, please sign up!
Attention
quilt show chairs: Our first quilt show
meeting for the chairs of the committees will be February 15, 2010 beginning at
7:00 PM. We will meet at Steve’s in King
of Prussia. Come early and shop as our
way of thanking Steve’s for hosting our meeting. The meeting will be over by 9:00. Please
call Jean Hayden, quilt show chair, for further information.
Snow Policy
Just a
reiteration of our policy in the event of inclement weather on the day of our
guild meeting:
We'll make a
determination by 5pm on a snowy day.
We'll e-mail
that determination to guild members at that time.
If you
normally get notification regarding newsletter availability, then you will get
one of these e-mail messages.
If you do
not have e-mail, then you'll simply identify a buddy who does have access
to e-mail and call that person to verify whether or not we'll be meeting
If your
e-mail access is through your work and you've been sent home early due to snow,
then you'll identify a buddy who has e-mail access at home to find out our
meeting status.
We’ll also
put notification of storm-related determinations on our web site (if our web
master is available to do so at the time needed)
Hopefully
our meeting nights will be free of snowy complications, but it will be nice to
have a clear-cut way of determining our status in the event of inclement
weather.
Did You Know?
What is the
difference between typical white quilting cotton and fabric “prepared for
dyeing?”
Cotton
fabric is naturally an ecru or cream color.
If the fabric is destined to be sold as white fabric, it is bleached,
washed, often treated with optic whiteners, and then washed again. Fabrics treated with optic whiteners
generally do not accept dye as well as untreated fabrics.
Fabric
labeled “Prepared for Dyeing (PFD)” generally has no optic whiteners, finishes,
or sizing added. PFD fabric may shrink
more since it has not endured the same amount and type of processing and
washing as a commercially prepared white fabric.

Newsletter”, Dec/Jan 2010/No. 413, page 28)
