VFHQ News – January 2010

Clips from Chris

It is so hard to believe that 2010 is upon us, Happy New Year to all.  As one reflects on 2009, I say another great year has passed! And now looking ahead for 2010, wow, it appears to be another great and busy year heading our way.  As usual, we’ve lined up many new and exciting things for guild. First, we have our new block of the month coordinators for 2010, our friends Sally Rapp and Beth Quigley.  They have coordinated a great 2010 BOM for you all to enjoy.  Second, now that our new Accuquilt has arrived we have our Comfort Quilt coordinator Jean Corday churning away those die cut patterns using this wonderful machine in preparation for our February 27 workshop. Remember this is a workshop is for all…it benefits various charities in our local community in so many ways and that is truly what our guild is about. Then onto our quilt show year! Our dear friend Jean Hayden has started her planning; actually I think she never stopped. She along with our program coordinator, Gloria Clark, have worked so hard all year long coordinating programs and workshops for us all to enjoy. Also a grand thank you to the new committee heads and to all the others who work tirelessly on behalf of our guild, it wouldn’t be the great group it is without all of you.

So take my advice, rest up, check your calendars and be ready to pencil great stuff into your schedule for the upcoming year.  Also you might want to get sewing, the quilt show police are watching.
- Chris

January Meeting – January 19, 2010

When Jean Hayden and I saw Terry Kramzar's quilt entitled "Leaves" at Quilt Odyssey, we noted how unique the construction was.  Well, then and there, we decided that we would invite her to our guild to show us how she does it.  At our January meeting you will meet fiber artist Terry Kramzar.  She will present a trunk show of her quilts and demonstrate the technique used in making "Leaves."  You may view some of Terry's designs at www.terrykramzar.com.

- Kate Sevensky, Sally Lightcap and Nancy Hannum

CAPTION:
Dottie Dolgash won the box at the August meeting. The prize was a pattern for table runner and placemats along with fabric to make a holiday table runner.   Here she is with the completed project!

Challenge 2010

Our Challenge this year—as announced in September—is as follows:

Three P’s – Petite, Plaid or Polka Dot

Use at least two of the three “P’s” (you may use all three!) to make a quilted project.

Petite is defined as 20” or less on any given side.  If petite is NOT chosen as a parameter of the design, then the size of a quilted wall hanging should be no larger than 50" on any given side.

Plaid or polka dot fabric must be included in at least 25% of the overall design whether used singly or in combination.

Use any design or pattern, original or commercially available, and any construction technique for your project.  You may use components that are appliquéd, pieced, embroidered, cross-stitched, painted, embellished, etc., or a combination thereof.

You must include with your submission a typed description of your challenge piece (perhaps something intriguing about material, or an interesting occurrence during the process, or a unique aspect of the design, or an unusual technique you used, etc.).  Your description should be between 50 to 75 words (no more than 100 words) using 12-point type (or standard typewriter size), on a card or paper no larger than 8½ x 8½.  (If you don’t have access to a computer or typewriter, a neatly hand-printed description will be acceptable.)

Your creation can be any quilted item (including jacket, bag, etc.).

Your creation should be something made during the coming year (between 10/2009 and 9/2010).

As usual, one entry per-person will be accepted.

Completed challenge quilts will be displayed and voted on at the September guild meeting in 2010.

All questions regarding this challenge should be directed to Judy Snook 610.933-8094 or judyann112@verizon.net

Fat Quarter Raffle

The 3 “P” Challenge – January, February & March, 2010

In conjunction with the VFHQ Challenge – September 2010, we have an opportunity to have an incentive to get started on the Challenge project or add some fun fat quarters to your stash. Bring in a fat quarter that is either PLAID, POLKA Dot or A FAT QUARTER THAT IS A COLOR STARTING WITH THE LETTER “P”.  When you drop off your fat quarter, fill in the entry form with your name and as many colors that start with the letter “P” that you can think of on the spot.   No cheat sheets from the internet allowed.

In March, one name will be drawn and one entry form with most “P” colors will be the winners.

Earn Money for Our Guild

Our guild earns money from the grocery store rebate program through Redner’s Warehouse Markets Save-A-Tape Program and from eScrip merchants including Genuardi’s and Macys.  (ACME is in the process of re-evaluating their program which has prevented us from continuing this program with them.)

Redner’s Warehouse Markets Sav-A-Tape Program - 1% of what members spend at Redner’s is rewarded to the guild.  Members need to sign up for the SAV-A-TAPE at their local Redner’s.  They will receive a plastic card that should be scanned each time they make a purchase.  The receipt should be brought to the next guild meeting and placed in the container labeled “Redners”.  This is located on the information table at each meeting.

Genuardi’s and other merchants such as Macy’s participate in the eScrip program which our guild is a participating group.  Members need to register their grocery club card and your debit/credit card(s).  Do this by logging on to http://www.escrip.com/  and go to “sign up.”

Our guild is registered as:  Valley Forge Homestead Quilters Guild and our group ID #149032240.  Just enter the group ID at the sign up page and enter your Genuardi’s Club card number.  If you wish, you can also register debit/credit cards and local credit cards such as Macy’s.  Each time you shop at Genuardi’s or other participating merchants and use your Club Card or debit/credit card, the guild earns money.  It is all automatic…no collecting of receipts.

However, you must renew your registration each year by November 1.  You can go to this URL:  http://www.escrip.com/ and then click on “YES RENEW.”  If you don’t have access to a computer, you can also fill out one of the forms on the information table and give to Candy Garrido who is responsible for this program.

Any questions regarding either program can be directed to Candy Garrido (candygarrido@verizon.net) or 215.256.7989.

Our Quilt Show

Take a moment right now to mark your calendar to make sure you don’t schedule a vacation or anything else on the dates of our quilt show which will be held October 22 and 23, 2010 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, King of Prussia, PA.  All members may enter three quilts plus any quilts from the workshops from the past two years, the BOM, and Challenge Quilts.  We will check-in our quilts at our October 19, 2010 guild meeting.  The set-up for the event will be October 21 (after 12-noon).  Please remember that all members are needed to help with this event so when the sign up sheets come around to help, please sign up!

Attention quilt show chairs:  Our first quilt show meeting for the chairs of the committees will be February 15, 2010 beginning at 7:00 PM.  We will meet at Steve’s in King of Prussia.  Please call Jean Hayden, quilt show chair, for further information.

Snow Policy

Just a reiteration of our policy in the event of inclement weather on the day of our guild meeting:

We'll make a determination by 5pm on a snowy day.

We'll e-mail that determination to guild members at that time.

If you normally get notification regarding newsletter availability, then you will get one of these e-mail messages.

If you do not have e-mail, then you'll simply identify a buddy who does have access to e-mail and call that person to verify whether or not we'll be meeting

If your e-mail access is through your work and you've been sent home early due to snow, then you'll identify a buddy who has e-mail access at home to find out our meeting status.

We’ll also put notification of storm-related determinations on our web site (if our web master is available to do so at the time needed)

Hopefully our meeting nights will be free of snowy complications, but it will be nice to have a clear-cut way of determining our status in the event of inclement weather.
