VFHQ News –
July 2010
Clips from Chris
After the winter I had, I was so
looking forward to summer! I actually
might take that statement back. Not only
has this summer been a hot one, it has been a busy one. Many graduations, picnics, guild meetings,
workshops and the list goes on and on. Most of all, I
am looking forward to what the month of July has to offer such as our guild
meeting with our friend, Linda Hamel, guiding us through a wonderful wool
project. Then onto our hand quilting friends, Cathy Fennell and Lou Chandler,
as they once again share their talent and help guide us through the interesting
challenge of hand quilting. The saddest
thing this month for me is a very dear and outstanding friend, Shellie Blake,
is moving away from us. I along with so
many will miss her so, so much! We love
you girl, please make sure you visit and don’t forget that we need you come
retreat time!
-Chris

You'll have a chance to make one at our July meeting. Linda Hamel
will work with us to create our own wool pin cushions. The guild will
provide the felted wool fabric and stuffing.

so when the sign up sheets come around to help,

50 - 50 with a Twist
High Card Draw was the game for June's
5--50 With A Twist game. Contestants
Nancy Hannum and Maxine Close selected one card from
a deck of cards. After revealing the
cards to the audience, Nancy was awarded $45 for having the highest value card
and Maxine received $20.50, half of the evening's collection. Now that we are down to the last three
months, additional cash prizes will be awarded from the money taken in over the
course of the year. Next month's game is
21.
In August the Survivor's name will be
selected and a money prize will be awarded.
Chances are still $1 for one or 6 for $5.

Fat Quarter Raffle
I’ll Take Vanilla – Background Fabrics
– July, August, September 2010
The Background Fabrics Fat Quarter
Raffle drawing will be at the September meeting. Need some contrast to your multi-colored
stash, the favorite background is white.
White is not a shade but a color. White reflects all colors of the
visible light spectrum to the eyes.
There are billions of different shades of white in the world but only
about 80 major ones. Many of the white background fabrics have tone on tone
patterns that add interesting dimension to your quilt design. Try some, off-white, Bright white, soft
white, blue white, alabaster, cream, ecru, eggshell, pearl, ivory, oyster,
winter white, ice, milk white and of course, I’ll take vanilla. Bring in your
favorite white background fat quarters, fill in the entry form with your name
and put in the jar. The drawing will
give a lucky winner a bonus prize too.
The next raffle will be October/
November, December, if you have any suggestions, please email me – jrenee336@yahoo.com.

Welcome!
Maureen Pratt is our newest member and
heard about us when she was taking a class at Steve’s. She was a textile major in college and sewed
most of her clothes. Maureen has had a
quilt exhibited as part of the PA Quilt Show at Fort Washington. She became interested in quilting due to a
Dresden Plate quilt her mother had made when she was twelve and it was her
mother’s bed quilt. Seeing that quilt
made her want to make one, too so she started quilting when she was in the
eighth grade. Her favorite projects are
scrap quilts and she has made nine bed-size quilts. Besides quilting, Maureen enjoys reading,
gardening, embroidery both hand and machine, and knitting. Maureen is retired and lives with an elderly
Tibetan terrier who is definitely the boss.
Welcome, Maureen!

Please bring your book to the meeting

Dear Valley Forge Quilters,
Thanks so much for your warm welcome last week when I visited your
Guild. You are a fun bunch … i.e. –
Jeopardy!
I am so glad you enjoyed seeing my
basket quilt collection and I apologize for all the paper shuffling – they are
now stapled together…in order! Hopefully
we can make plans for a workshop in 2011.
Keep on stitching!

Planning Ahead
Giant Fabric & Quilting Book Sale:
September 21, 2010
Clear out your unwanted fabric from
your stash - fabrics you liked when purchased, but that you now know are
probably not going to be used. Included
in the sale are any quilting books you may want to part with, along with tools
and gadgets. .
Why not sell them at our September 21st. meeting? All monies realized go directly back to you
so that you can buy more new fabric to replace what you just sold. And remember -- one quilter's stash-trash is
another quilter's treasure. So whether
you're bringing fabric to sell or not, come prepared with cash for those treasures
you're sure to find!
Here are the guidelines:
·
You
set the price.
·
Each
piece of fabric, "package" of fabrics or quilting books must be
clearly labeled with:
-
Your name
-
Price you are asking
-
Yardage or size of fabric (not for books or tools)
·
Put
all this information on a label or tag so when the buyer goes to pay at the
cashier table it can be recorded on the "sellers" sheet.
·
You
may also sell kits, completed tops or orphan blocks. (Please no U.F.O's) All items must be labeled like above.
·
Pre-register
your name with Sally Rapp (610-489-6892) by Saturday, September 20, 2010 if you
plan to sell. Since we have to plan the
set-up in advance, only names registered will be given table space. All items must fit onto one-half of a large
table. Be selective in what you bring to
sell because it must fit in the space provided.
·
Buyers
need to pay in cash, so come prepared.
·
Bring
your own shopping bag to take home your purchases.
We hope this will give members an
opportunity to earn some money for themselves while cleaning out your fabric
stash and books. Any items you did not
sell will be gladly accepted for "Grandma's Attic" at our upcoming
October show.
If you have questions, please call Sally
Rapp or Gloria Clark.
Two Months Left: Are you up for the CHALLENGE?
There’s still time to prepare a
challenge quilt! Rules below:
Three P’s – Petite, Plaid or Polka Dot
·
Use
at least two of the three “P’s” (you may use all three!) to make a quilted
project.
·
Petite
is defined as 20” or less on any given side. If petite is NOT chosen as a
parameter of the design, then the size of a quilted wall hanging should be no
larger than 50" on any given side.
·
Plaid
or polka dot fabric must be included in at least 25% of the overall design
whether used singly or in combination.
·
Use
any design or pattern, original or commercially available, and any construction
technique for your project. You may use components that are appliquéd,
pieced, embroidered, cross-stitched, painted, embellished, etc., or a
combination thereof.
·
You
must include with your submission a typed description of your challenge piece
(perhaps something intriguing about material, or an interesting occurrence
during the process, or a unique aspect of the design, or an unusual technique
you used, etc.). Your description should be between 50
to 75 words (no more than 100 words) using 12-point type (or standard
typewriter size), on a card or paper no larger than 8½ x 8½. (If you
don’t have access to a computer or typewriter, a neatly hand-printed description
will be acceptable.)
·
Your
creation can be any quilted item (including jacket, bag, etc.).
·
Your
creation should be something made during the coming year (between 10/2009 and
9/2010).
·
As
usual, one entry per-person will be accepted.
·
Completed
challenge quilts will be displayed and voted on at the September guild meeting
in 2010.
·
All
questions regarding this challenge should be directed to Judy Snook
610.933-8094 or judyann112@verizon.net

August Meeting Preview – August
17, 2010
If you think you know every appliqué
technique there is, here’s still another one.
Linda Poole, who has taught at many quilt shows, locally (Lancaster and
Oaks), throughout the U.S., and internationally, will show us many quilts which
demonstrate her unique appliqué technique.
Her books, etc., will be sold at both her lecture and appliqué class the
following day. Don’t miss learning this
appliqué technique from the International Outreach Coordinator for the Appliqué
Society. You may view Linda’s quilts on her website: www.lindampoole.com (See Patti Fulton’s wall hanging
entitled Water Lilies made in Linda’s class at the AQS quilt show in Lancaster.)
