VFHQ News – June 2010

Clips from Chris

Just a friendly note to all from Jean Hayden and myself.  Thank you all for all of your efforts for our upcoming quilt show in October.  Without member participation, our show would not be the success that it is.  We are looking forward to all of the quilts you have been feverishly working on in the many workshops.  Please don’t forget to work on those boutique and Chinese auction items which are some of the highlights of the show. You might also want to thin out the sewing room to make room for more new and exciting items because Grandma’s attic always appreciates those goodies that can be recycled to other homes.  Happy sewing! See you all soon.
-Chris

June Meeting – June 15, 2010

Enjoy our wonderful annual picnic as well as listen to Polly Mello tell us about “Quilts That Go Bump In the Night.”  This is not about Halloween quilts.  It's a trunk show of quilts representing unusual events, including historical disasters.  Recommended by Dawn Heefner and all of us who met Polly at Quilt Odyssey.  Please remember to make this a successful picnic; we do rely on all our members to bring one of the following.

- If your last name begins with A—F, bring a dessert

- If your last name begins with G—L, bring a salad or hors d’oeuvre

- If your last name begins with M—Z, bring a main dish

Our Quilt Show

If you haven’t already marked your calendar, please take a moment right now to do so, in order to ensure that you don’t schedule a vacation or anything else on the dates of our quilt show which will be held October 22 and 23, 2010 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, King of Prussia, PA.  Please remember that all members are needed to help with this event so when the sign up sheets come around to help, please sign up!  As usual, we will check-in our quilts at our October 19, 2010 guild meeting.  The registration form is available on our web site: http://www.valleyforgequilters.org.  Click on the “Events” tab then on “Quilt Show” on the left hand column (the form is also available from the administrative tab in the forms page).  You’ll use one form for each quilt you’re exhibiting.  You may exhibit 3 quilts in the main exhibition areas (one of which can be bed-size); and you may exhibit any of your guild activity quilts (in the “workshop” room).

Boutique:  For those of us who are working (or will be working) on items for our Quilt show Boutique, you'll find the related forms in the Administrative section of our web site under "forms."  There is a form for items you intend to donate and a form for items you intend to sell on consignment (both can be found in the same file).

Grandma’s Attic:  Jean and Laura will begin collecting items at our July guild meeting.  They would prefer a little at a time each month so they can store everything properly.

Next Meeting of committee chairs:  September 13, 2010, location TBD.

50 - 50 with a Twist

May's 50-50 With a Twist game was "Spelling Bee".  Beth Quigley and Jacqui Santangelo were the contestants for the evening.  Beth confessed to being in a spelling bee during her school days and was unlucky enough to spell that word incorrectly.  As fate would have it, Beth's luck turned and she spelled STASH correctly and won $23.   Jacqui had to be comforted by chocolate and hand cream.

The last quarter of 50-50 will feature simple card games.  In August, the Survivor's name will be drawn and a money prize will be given.

Chances are still $1 for one or 6 for $5.
-Kate, Sally and Nancy

A New Long-Arm Quilter

I have "officially" opened my longarm quilting business.  It is called Darlington Quilts.

The largest quilt top I can put on my frame is 104 inches, so please keep that in mind.  The backing and batting will need to be 4 to 8 inches larger than the top on all 4 sides, so I can pin it to my frame and hold the sides with my large clamps.  I have a $50.00 minimum for my E2E quilting.  Let me turn your UFO's into beautiful quilts that you can use, instead of hiding those tops in a bag in your closet.

My longarm quilting machine is an APQS stitch regulated Liberty which I purchased in April of 2008, so we've had time to "bond" before beginning this new venture.

If you are interested in having me quilt your tops during this special, please contact me either by e-mail at DarlingtonQuilts@gmail.com or call my cell at 215-498-0497.  I will get back to you within 24 hours so we can discuss our options and arrangements.
-Thanks, Sandy

Welcome!

SherriJoyce King resides in Gladwyne, PA and found us by browsing the Web.  She was looking for a suburban guild that offered speakers plus other less formal get-togethers.  Her grandmother made all her clothes and also, taught her to sew on an old Kenmore.  Her grandmother also taught her how to crochet and knit.  SherriJoyce became interested in quilting in 2000 when she got tendonitis in both elbows and was looking for a craft that was less repetitious.  At that point, she visited a client’s office and saw a beautiful quilt.  This person recruited her into her guild and SherriJoyce has been a quilting addict ever since.  She likes to make working quilts, quilts that people will use.  SherriJoyce has made several bed quilts but so far, no bigger than twin size, although she will be venturing into the full-size bed quilt sometime soon.  Other than quilting, SherriJoyce enjoys laughing, reading and visiting with her daughters.  SherriJoyce is retired from her job as an information management consultant.  After she retired, she worked in a sewing machine store selling Babylocks and Pfaffs.  She and her husband, Hussein, moved to this area to be near both their daughters, Sara and Maggie.  Actually, they are in the middle of the two daughters as one works in Maryland and one works in New York.  SherriJoyce and Hussein are also the proud owners of a boy puppy named Mango.  Welcome, SherriJoyce!

Block of the Month

Please bring your book to the meeting each month to get the updates for the blocks to be done the following month.

Designs are from Jennifer Chiaverini - SYLVIA'S BRIDAL SAMPLER from Elm Creek Quilts.  Below are the blocks we will be doing for the next three months.  All blocks are 6" finished.

Bride’s Bouquet        Stamp Baskets                   Love…Mist

Of course you can do any others blocks listed in the book but they will not count toward the prize drawings.

A Special Thank You

Thanks to all the members of this guild for the hugs, prayers, thoughts and sympathy after the death of my father.  He would be happy to know I am being so well cared for.

50/50 With a Twist:  Tonight we had a spelling bee.  Our contestants were Beth Quigley and Jacqui Santangelo.  Each contestant had to be ready to hit the “buzzer light” after the word was read.   Kate asked:  Who can spell STASH.  Beth hit the light and was able to correctly spell the word.  She was the winner of $23.00.  Jacqui had the runner up award of candy.

Are you up for the CHALLENGE 2010?

There’s still time to prepare a challenge quilt!  Rules below:

Three P’s – Petite, Plaid or Polka Dot

·      Use at least two of the three “P’s” (you may use all three!) to make a quilted project.

·      Petite is defined as 20” or less on any given side.  If petite is NOT chosen as a parameter of the design, then the size of a quilted wall hanging should be no larger than 50" on any given side.

·      Plaid or polka dot fabric must be included in at least 25% of the overall design whether used singly or in combination.

·      Use any design or pattern, original or commercially available, and any construction technique for your project.  You may use components that are appliquéd, pieced, embroidered, cross-stitched, painted, embellished, etc., or a combination thereof.

·      You must include with your submission a typed description of your challenge piece (perhaps something intriguing about material, or an interesting occurrence during the process, or a unique aspect of the design, or an unusual technique you used, etc.).  Your description should be between 50 to 75 words (no more than 100 words) using 12-point type (or standard typewriter size), on a card or paper no larger than 8½ x 8½.  (If you don’t have access to a computer or typewriter, a neatly hand-printed description will be acceptable.)

·      Your creation can be any quilted item (including jacket, bag, etc.).

·      Your creation should be something made during the coming year (between 10/2009 and 9/2010).

·      As usual, one entry per-person will be accepted.

·      Completed challenge quilts will be displayed and voted on at the September guild meeting in 2010.

·      All questions regarding this challenge should be directed to Judy Snook 610.933-8094 or judyann112@verizon.net

Summer “Quilty” Reading

Bostwick, Marie.  A Thread So Thin:  A Cobbled Court Novel.  NY: Kensington Books, 2010.

The third in the Cobbled Court series, we are reintroduced to Evelyn Dixon and her friends during the cold winter months in New England.  This story deals with Evelyn’s son, Garrett and his girlfriend, Liza plus other characters involved in their romance.  Liza has returned to art school but had worked in Evelyn’s quilt shop and is about to graduate but is not sure what she wants to do with the rest of her life.  One will be entertained with the quilt references, the quilt shop episodes as well as the many love intrigues throughout this delightful novel.  The ending is a surprise well-worth the read.

Chiaverini, Jennifer. The Aloha Quilt: An Elm Creek Quilts Novel.  NY:  Simon & Schuster, 2010.

Bonnie Markham, one of the original Elm Creek quilters, is going through a nasty divorce and trying to recover from the loss of her quilt shop in this wonderful new novel by Jennifer Chiaverini.  One will enjoy quilting fun along with information on Hawaiian quilts, since Bonnie travels to Hawaii to start a new life away from her soon to be ex-husband, the Elm Creek quilters (who she misses terribly) and other problems.  If you ever wanted to visit Hawaii, this book will take you there and much more.  Another enjoyable and well-done book by my favorite quilt author, Jennifer Chiaverini.

Sachitano, Arlene.  Quilt As You Go: A Harriet Truman/Loose Threads Mystery.  Austin, TX:  Zumaya Publications, 2009.

Harriet Truman, the owner of a long-arm quilting business, is involved with making quilts for a Civil War reenactment in her hometown of Foggy Point, Washington.  As in the previous Loose Threads mysteries, Harriet becomes involved with an unexpected murder of a man that many thought was already dead.  Quilt As You Go is a great read full of intrigue, romance, quilting and fun.  One will want to continue to read this book until the mystery is solved and life goes back to normal in Foggy Point.

Wilde, Lori.  The True Love Quilting Club.  NY:  Avon Books, 2010.

If you believe in true love and finding your soul mate, as well as enjoy reading about quilting, this may be the book for you.  This is a true Romance Novel with quilting thrown in.  It starts with a 13-year-old girl and a 14-year-old-boy who meet in Twilight, Texas and both feel they have found their soul mates but due to circumstances beyond their control, the young girl, Trixie Lynn, moves away.   Trixie Lynn’s life is full of twists and turns and she ends up in New York trying to be an actress but with a twist of fate, returns to the town in Texas and meets up with her soul mate.  Just a word of concern, if you read Romance Novels you will be okay with some of the scenes that tend to be more sexual than is needed but if you are uncomfortable with these types of scenes, you may want to pass on reading this book.
