VFHQ News – January
2008
Clips from Chris
As we begin with another new
year!! I couldn’t help but reflect on
the past year and then look ahead to the upcoming new year. It is Quilt Show year and I need to finish
some quilts or the quilt show police (Jean) will come and take me away. This in turn leads me to thinking about my
own personal goals for my 2008 OCD quilting hobby. Organize my sewing room…doing so-so
in that department, I
did however organize some other things. Complete
some of those UFO‘s, making good progress there. I finished a full size mystery quilt today,

Welcome
Joan Shaw heard about us by attending
our last quilt show. She started sewing
clothes for herself around age eleven and continued by making clothes for her
husband and then for her sons when they were in pre-school and when she was a
full time homemaker. She began quilting
about fifteen years ago. She saw a
“grandmother’s garden” quilt in an Appalachian Museum and since it was all
hexagons, she figured it was easy. It
turned out not to be hard, but it took quite a while – seven years – since she
prefers to do hand sewing and quilting.
Joan enjoys handwork – piecing and quilting projects. She has completed a bed-size quilt and also
enjoys reading, walking, and biking. Joan aquacizes and likes to travel. Joan is currently retired but taught for 25
years and worked as a journalist for eight years. Her husband, Don, is still working and they have
two sons. Both sons are married, with
one living in S.W. Virginia and the other in

Snow Policy
Just a reiteration of our policy in the
event of inclement weather on the day of our guild meeting… This policy was put into place last year
because we’ve found that phone chains are notoriously un-reliable. Here’s the plan we established last year:
We'll make a determination by
We'll e-mail that determination to
guild members at that time.
If you normally get notification
regarding newsletter availability, then you will get one of these e-mail
messages.
If you do not have e-mail, then you'll
simply identify a buddy who does have access to e-mail and call that
person to verify whether or not we'll be meeting
If your e-mail access is through your
work and you've been sent home early due to snow, then you'll identify a buddy
who has e-mail access at home to find out our meeting status.
We’ll also put notification of
storm-related determinations on our web site (if our web master is available to
do so at the time needed)
Hopefully our meeting nights will be
free of snowy complications, but it will be nice to have a clear-cut way of determining
our status in the event of inclement weather.
Fat Quarter Raffle
The
current Quarter Raffle drawing will occur at March’s guild meeting. The fabric theme for this time is Civil War
Reproduction fabric. To participate,
simply bring a fat quarter (any guild night between now and March), place it in
the designated basket, along with your name, and you’ll be eligible for the
drawing to win them all! You will receive one chance to
win for each fat quarter you contribute. The guidelines are simple:
1.
The fabric must be a fat quarter measuring 18" X 22".
2.
It should be washed and ironed
3.
It must keep to the announced theme
4. It should be “quilt-shop-quality” fabric
Any
questions, contact Jean Corday.
Loose Threads Tea
As indicated in our last newsletter,
the Loose Threads Quilters Tea is around the corner. “Loose Threads” is a sister quilt guild. The format will be the same as belore with discussion groups, quilt exhibit, garage sale,
craft sale, Chinese auction, friendship quilt block raffle, guest show-and-tell
and buffet brunch.
The Tea will be
Best Tips from Fons
and Porter
Next time you’re at your favorite
quilt shop, ask for an empty bolt board.
Wrap a towel around it and safety pin in place to make a lightweight,
portable ironing surface to take to a workshop.
When threading a needle for hand
sewing, moisten the eye of the needle rather than the thread. The moisture in the eye will help draw the
thread through.
Use a felt tip pen to mark the notch
when you take the thread end out of a spool for the first time. You’ll easily be able to relocate the notch
to lock the thread end back in place for storage.
Spray limp pieces of fabric with
starch or spray sizing before rotary cutting.
Starching the wrong side of flannel or homespun fabrics before you cut
helps firm up the weave and thus reduces fraying when you sew.
Use the flannel side of a
flannel-backed plastic or vinyl tablecloth as a design wall. Cotton pieces adhere well without pinning,
and the tablecloth is light and portable.
When making a signature quilt, press
pieces of freezer paper to the wrong side of signature areas of blocks so
fabric doesn’t slip when people are signing.
(From Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting,
November 2006.)
Quilt and Be Happy
In her zest for living and loving
quilting, Kay England offers these reminders:
Enjoy the process. It’s the journey that’s the most
important. It’s more about the “doing”
than the “done”.
Make sure your tools are right. From rulers to sewing machine, the tools you
use affect your accuracy, organization, and consistency.
Have faith in yourself. If this is your first time quilting, it won’t
be your best, but there’s still value in that piece whether it’s perfect or
not.
Document - it is crucial. Help people know how and why you made your
quilt. The value is for generations who
come after you, who will love and respect your work more than you do today.
(From American Patchwork & Quilting, February 2008)
Macaroon Recipe
14 oz package flake coconut
14 oz can sweetened
condensed milk
2 tsp vanilla
3 T flour
Mix coconut and flour. Stir in milk and vanilla. Drop from teaspoon 1” apart on well-greased
cookie sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes until lightly browned.
I keep watch on them and sometimes
even do one first to check time and temp.
I forgot the vanilla for guild, so you can do what you want with
it. I might try 1 tsp next time, just to
see, since they were good without it.
They really are quick and easy.
And I found the coconut keeps well if the bag isn’t opened, so I usually
have it and milk on hand. Enjoy.

St. Christopher’s Hospital
Shirley Horning and Norma Brechbiel visited St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children
on December 8. We took 45 quilts for
children, 40 “Preemie” hats for babies, and 300 books. We had the entire back of Shirley’s car
loaded up – had all the books in three suitcases. Shirley contacted the Volunteer Office and
they suggested we go to the back of the hospital to the loading dock to unload
everything. We did that – there were
several volunteers there to help unload everything. Then we parked and went into the hospital to
the Volunteer Office. We were given a
coupon for a free lunch (which we thoroughly enjoyed!). They were most grateful for all our
donations. It was a most rewarding trip.
