VFHQ News – February 2007
Lines from Lou
The months are
speeding by—thank goodness since I cannot abide winter. I’m sitting here at my computer with a space
heater at my feet and no motivation to move to the sewing machine where I
cannot use the heater and the iron at the same time … but on a more positive
note, we have so much great stuff on the docket for the next several
months! For example, take a look at our
Turning Twenty workshop, scheduled for March, where Steve will be on hand to
service machines, sharpen scissors, etc. That and so many more excellent opportunities
are planned, not the least of which are our regular Bees at each other’s
homes. What a delight it is to associate
with you all!
February Meeting –
Our own
guild members, Rosemary Geisler and Judy Snook will
present a Quilted Counted-Cross Stitch Iron-on Wall hanging. The grid will be provided by the guild. You bring the following:
Supply List
Large towel to
lay your grid on
1 ½" squares as follows:
17-20 assorted
green squares (leaves)
9-10 squares
for each flower (4 flowers)
14 squares in
one shade of gold or brown (basket)
45 squares in
another shade of gold or brown (basket)
4 half-square
triangles in the basket shade & the background shade
(these still measure 1 ½” square)
200 squares for
the background
If you
prepare a few extra of each color, you won’t be caught short. Each flower could be made of one fabric or a
variety of the same color. It is best to
choose a moda marble or similar fabric, not a floral
print. The center of each flower could
be a different color or a lighter or darker shade of the flower. If you want a more curved look to your
flowers, make 3-4 half-square triangles from the flower color and the
background fabric. Each half square
triangle still measures 1 ½”.

Secret Pal is Back
A secret pal
is an anonymous friend in the guild who gives gifts to you every month. And, as a secret pal, you, likewise, give
gifts to another member of the guild every month. You know who you’re giving to, but you don’t
know who is giving to you. You can try
to guess who your secret pal might be but no one knows until it’s
revealed (next year). Guild members have
the opportunity to participate in the secret pal program by filling out a
questionnaire about themselves. The Secret Pal Chair uses the information on
the questionnaires to match up the secret pals and notifies each participating
guild member of the name of his/her secret pal to whom they’re to give
gifts. Each participant will purchase
gifts on a monthly basis for their “secret pal.” The gifts should cost between $6.00 and $10.00
(per our survey results), and should
pertain to quilting or the interests of their secret pal. Participants bring
the gifts to the monthly guild meeting and place them on the table labeled
Secret Pal. In addition to this, secret
pals send birthday cards or provide little gifts for special occasions,
etc. At the end of the secret pal year,
at the “reveal,” it has been traditional that the recipients give a little gift
to the person revealed as their secret pal (the person who has been giving to
them all year).
This is a
great way to get to know guild members and make new friends. Secret Pal is starting now, so visit the
website, click on “forms,” then click on “New Secret
Pal Form.” This document is formatted so
that you can easily enter the information on-line. From there, you can either
print it out and give it to Joan Gunder at our
February guild meeting or your can simply e-mail it to her. Here’s how to do that: With the form up on your computer screen, you
click “file” then "save-as," give it a name you'll recognize, and put
it in a place where you can find it among your
computer documents. Then simply
attach it to an e-mail to Joan (see your guild directory for her e-mail
address). She will e-mail you back to assure you that she received
it. If you don’t have access to the web,
there will be a few copies of the form available at our February guild
meeting. You’ll want to fill it out
there and give it to Joan that night.

If you have these, please contact Cathy Fennell and she will take them

Next Fat Quarter Raffle
We all need
more fabric - right? Our next Fat Quarter Raffle will bring more fabric
your way if you’re the winner. Simply bring a fat quarter, place it in
the designated basket and your name will then be entered to win them
all! You will receive one chance to win for each fat quarter
you contribute. The guidelines are simple:
1. The
fabric must be a fat quarter measuring 18" X 22".
2. It
should be washed and ironed
3. It
must keep to the announced theme
4. It must be quilt-shop quality
Our second
raffle will be in April. For our April drawing the theme is Batik
fabrics, this fabric is widely available at all the quilt shops. The
basket will be available in March and then again in April, so bring your fat
quarter(s) whenever you can. For each fat
quarter you contribute, your name is entered for a chance to win all. Any questions, contact Linda Hamel.
