VFHQ News – January 2007

Lines from Lou ü

Here we are at the start of a brand new year with new possibilities in abundance.  Here’s an idea—adapted from a Fons & Porter suggestion—that might just be the perfect way to kick-off this new year… Go through your UFOs and put them in 3 piles:  1) those things you want to work on in the next few months,  2) those things you’ll probably get to later this year, and 3) those things that no longer interest you.  Box or bag those items in the 3rd pile and store them where you’ll find them again for “grandma’s attic” at our next quilt show.  I find that the act of re-organizing something gives me a great feeling of renewal (and reducing a nagging to-do pile can’t hurt either).

Happy New Year!
       Lou

January Meeting – January 16, 2007 ü

Join us in January as Robert Cannell, massage therapist, presents Ergonomics and Quilting.  Ergonomics is “an applied science concerned with designing and arranging things people use so that the people and things interact most efficiently and safely.”  Robert will show us how to incorporate ergonomics into our quilting habits.  Also at our January meeting, we’ll have our first fabric raffle (see more info on that later in this newsletter).

One More Time … Have you taken the Survey? ü

If you were unable to attend the October 17 guild meeting, or if you didn’t complete the survey at that time, please take a moment to complete our survey on-line.  It’s quick and easy.  Just enter the survey’s web address into your web browser, and take the survey electronically.  That web address is: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=655042720578.  It’s a long one, so you might want to electronically copy it (from the “text only” version of the newsletter) and then paste it into your web browser.  If you have any questions or problems with this, feel free to call or e-mail Lou Chandler or Cathy Fennell.  We would like to have survey information from all members.  Thanks for your participation and assistance to help us make our guild better.  (Remember, if you filled out a paper survey, please do not do it electronically.)

Block of the Month ü

Dimensional Whimsy #2 for February is available on the website and will be presented at the January meeting.  Paper copies of the design & instructions will be available at the BOM table.  Bring your January block to the guild meeting and you could win a prize.

Block of the Month 2006 Recap

According to the sign in sheets, twenty guild members participated in the 2006 Block of the Month completing 135 blocks.  Thank you for participating in this endeavor into the Underground Railroad.

Welcome Welcome! ü

Christina Peterson, our newest member, resides in Royersford and found us through our flyer distributed at the Hershey Quilt Show.  Christina enjoys lots of handwork like piecing, appliqué, and quilting.  She also does counted cross stitch and needlepoint.  In the past year, she has endeavored machine quilting through some classes.  She took her first quilting class in the 1970’s at a local quilt shop and enjoyed it but school and work took up most of her time so that the quilting went by the wayside until two or three years ago, when she took it up again.  She also enjoys gardening, reading and yoga while working as a project manager for a health care system.  Christina grew up in Colorado and moved to Pennsylvania ten years ago to take an interesting job.  She resides with her husband, who is retired and her three cats.

Don’t Forget … ü
 Our “found money” opportunity

The guild is still participating in 3 grocery store rebate programs.  Please remember to bring the appropriate receipts to guild meetings and deposit them in the appropriate cans on the Welcome Table.  This is an easy way to raise money for the guild.  Thanks for your help.

Comfort Quilts – Special Thank You ü

Recently, the guild received the following thank you from the Abramson Cancer Center:

Dear VFHQ –

Once again we thank you for your recent generous donation of 8 quilts.  We are always so please to give your quilts to patients because of the consistent high quality and beauty of your quilts.  Thank you so much for thinking of our patients.

Sincerely, Sandy Blackburn

Fat Quarter Raffle ü

We all need more fabric - right?  Perhaps the newly initiated Fat Quarter Raffle may bring more fabric your way.  Simply bring a fat quarter, place it in the designated basket and your name will then be entered to win them all!   You will receive one chance to win for each fat quarter you contribute.  The guidelines are simple:

1.  The fabric must be a fat quarter measuring 18" X 22".

2.  It should be washed and ironed

3.  It must keep to the announced theme

We will begin the first raffle in January and 3 more will follow throughout the next year.  For our January drawing the theme is Thimbleberries fabric by RJR Fabrics, which is widely available at all the quilt shops.  The basket will be available beginning in December and then again in January, so bring your fat quarter whenever you can.  Any questions, contact Linda Hamel.

Snow Policy ü

In order to improve reliability (since phone chains are notoriously un-reliable), our snow policy—as instituted last year—is as follows:

We'll make a determination by 5pm on a snowy day.

We'll e-mail that determination to guild members at that time.

If you normally get notification regarding newsletter availability, then you will get one of these e-mail messages.

If you do not have e-mail, then you'll simply identify a buddy who does have access to e-mail and call that person to verify whether or not we'll be meeting

If your e-mail access is through your work and you've been sent home early due to snow, then you'll identify a buddy who has e-mail access at home to find out our meeting status.

Hopefully our meeting nights will be free of snowy complications, but it will be nice to have a clear-cut way of determining our status in the event of inclement weather.

New Year’s Resolution – Take the Challenge! ü

What a good idea… make a new-year’s resolution to participate in the current guild quilt challenge:

The Proverbial Challenge
VFHQ Challenge for 2006/2007

Choose a proverb that you enjoy or that has some meaning to you and devise a way to creatively express it in a quilt (which you will, of course, design and create).

Your interpretation of your proverb may be a literal representation, or an ironic portrayal, or a somewhat esoteric depiction, etc.

Use any construction technique and any fabric you wish.  And you may use components that are appliquéd, pieced, embroidered, cross-stitched, painted, embellished, etc., or a combination thereof.

You must include with your submission a typed description identifying the proverb you chose and explaining the rational for your design.  Your description should be between 50 to 75 words (no more than 100 words) using 12-point type (or standard typewriter size), on a card or paper no larger than 8½ x 8½.  (If you don’t have access to a computer or typewriter, a neatly hand-printed description will be acceptable.)

Your creation can be any quilted item (including jacket, bag, etc.).

The size of a quilted wall hanging should be no larger than 50" on any given side.

Your creation should be something made during the coming year (between 10/2006 and 9/2007).

As usual, one entry per-person will be accepted.

Completed challenge quilts will be displayed and voted on at the September guild meeting in 2007.

All questions regarding this challenge should be directed to Linda Hamel at 610.454-1283 or dhamel1283@aol.com

As food for thought, here are some proverbs to consider: a penny saved is a penny earned, don’t count your chickens before they hatch, make hay while the sun shines, every cloud has a silver lining, beauty is only skin deep, all that glitters is not gold, better late than never, and a stitch in time saves nine.

More proverbs can be found at the following web site:

www.columbia.edu/~sss31/rainbow/proverbs.html

February Meeting Preview – February 20, 2007 ü

Our own guild members, Rosemary Geisler and Judy Snook will present a Quilted Counted-Cross Stitch Iron-on Wall hanging.  Supply list and the grid will be provided by the guild.

 Our 20th Anniversary Approaches …

Another Calendar Cue ü

By Way of Reminder ü
Guild Committees & Board Liaisons

Ours is a highly dynamic guild with a great many committees and activities.  So, to help ensure smooth running of our many guild endeavors, the various committees have been paired with a liaison on the board.  The board members are responsible for representing—at board meetings—the interests or concerns of the committees, with whom they serve as liaisons.  And when a committee question, concern, or problem arises that should be escalated, the related committee head should contact their appropriate board liaison.
