VFHQ News – March 2007

Lines from Lou

Ah yes!  We’re finally into March, which my semi-optimistic psyche considers the beginning of Spring.  And—while admittedly a bit snow remains on the ground—it is actually starting to feel like spring!  So today I’m finally packing away the last of the Christmas decorations and I may actually send off the last of the Christmas presents.  Who knows, I might even conquer my printer problems and finish the Christmas cards.  I don’t know if it’s my enthusiasm for Spring or unadulterated shame that’s motivating this exuberant completion of long-awaited projects,  all I know is that I must clear away anything that’s not springy.

And now that I’ve admitted my extreme procrastination, don’t you all feel better about yourselves?  I’m happy to be able to lift your spirits—it’s the least I can do on this beautiful spring day.

       Best
          Lou

March Meeting – March 20, 2007

At our March meeting we will learn from and enjoy Mary Anne Ciccotelli as she demonstrates the “Needle and Thread Approach to the Folded Hexagon.”    During this lecture, each person will be supplied with a pre-cut hexagon to fold as the demonstration is illustrated during a power point presentation.  Actual samples of each step will also be available for review.  Participants should bring a sewing kit.  These hexagons could be used to make the Folded Hexabags.  These and additional folded fabric projects will be displayed at the presentation.  For more information, visit http://sewingandbeyond.com/.

Celebrate National Quilting Day – March 17, 2007

We quilters have our own special holiday – National Quilting Day! Whether you observe the day alone, with a few friends, or with a large group, we invite you to join with quiltmakers and quilt enthusiasts across the country for this special celebration.  National Quilting Day gives us the opportunity to reflect with pride on the traditions of quiltmaking and the contributions quiltmakers have made to their families and communities for many generations. NQA began sponsoring National Quilting Day with a resolution passed by members attending the 22nd Annual Show in Lincoln, Nebraska, in June 1991. The third Saturday in March is officially designated as National Quilting Day, but quilters are flexible and we love a celebration - especially when fabric is involved - so over the years, observance of National Quilting Day has unofficially been expanded to the whole month of March!

Block of the Month

Dimensional Whimsy #4 for April is available on the website and will be presented at the March meeting.  Bring your March block to the guild meeting and you could win a prize.  Paper copies of Dimensional Whimsy #4 will be at the BOM table.  In addition, pictures of the quilt is now on the web site.

Opportunity at Winterthur

"Quilts in a Material World:  Selections from the Winterthur Collection," running March 10-Sept 16 needs two different kinds of volunteers:

   1.  Quilters willing to "lend" their quilt(s) to hang in the Visitor Reception Area for a month at a time.  They can handle up to 6 quilts at a time (crib, twin, or queen—king-size won't fit!) and they need to have a sleeve for hanging.  If you'd like to display a quilt, contact Betty Fiske at 302-888-4831 or at bfiske@winterthur.org.

      2.  Volunteers to serve as demonstrators in the exhibition — you may have to interact with visitors who have questions.  They need every Saturday & Sunday (and any holiday Mondays) covered from 11:00-3:00.  Just bring your own quilt to work on and be ready to explain what you're doing to guests!  For more information about this opportunity, contact Ellen Hughes at 302-888-4871 or eshughe@winterthur.org.

In return for either, Winterthur is willing to display guild membership materials or information.  Any volunteers will be given a free pass to the entire exhibit.

Guild Display in Honor of Quilting Month

In observance of "our" National Quilting Day and to publcize our guild, I have arranged a"quilter's" display at the Upper Merion Township building.  Outside of the Upper Merion Library are three display cases and there is one case located directly inside of the library.  The cases are filled with quilting paraphanalia to exhibit this wonderful hobby that we all enjoy and to promote our guild, letting our community know a little about who we are.   I hope that you get a chance to stop by!  Beth Quigley

And there’s more 20th anniversary festivities—During both these workshops, Steve of Steve’s Sewing, Vacuum & Quilting Center will offer a mini service for your sewing machine.  The cost will be $35.00 and if a full service is needed the $35.00 will be credited towards the $75.00 service fee.  Steve will demo proper maintenance and cleaning of your machine and will have cleaning kits for sale, as well.  He will also sharpen scissors for a $2.00 fee.

Also, as part of our celebration, you can go to Steve’s to purchase your fat quarters (and/or fabric to be cut into fat quarters) and if you tell them it is for these workshops, they will discount the fabric 20% (are you catching on to this “20” theme?).  And, of course, his staff will help you with your selection.

Welcome to New Members

Betty Dix heard about us from Kim Stefus and recently joined the guild.  Betty has been quilting for 30-plus years and she got interested in quilting because she wanted to use scraps from kids’ clothes.  She is still using scraps but not from kids’ clothes.  She has completed a few bed-size quilts and enjoys all quilt-related projects.  Betty is fortunate enough to be able to sew at her place of employment—lucky her.

Joan Lautensack, who resides in Jeffersonville, heard about us through Carol Armstrong, her neighbor.  She belonged to a guild in Florida and also belonged to Embroiderer’s Guild.  She was also a Home Ec. Teacher.  Joan likes to do wall hangs and art quilts.  She also dyes her own fabrics.  Joan is married, has three children and seven grandchildren.

Janet Lentz lives in Conshohocken and found us on the Internet.  Her mother-in-law taught her to quilt in 1982 and since then has made several large quilts and many small ones.  She enjoys making wall hangings and laments that she—like many of us—does not have enough time for her favorite hobby, quilting.  Besides quilting, Janet enjoys reading and has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.  She is a quality manager for a chemical company, is married and has a grown son.  Janet is a cat lover and currently has two cats.

Fat Quarter Raffle

We all need more fabric - right?  Perhaps the newly initiated Fat Quarter Raffle—which we hold quarterly—may bring more fabric your way.  Simply bring a fat quarter, place it in the designated basket and your name will then be entered to win them all!   You will receive one chance to win for each fat quarter you contribute.  The guidelines are simple:

1.  The fabric must be a fat quarter measuring 18" X 22"

2.  It should be washed and ironed

3.  It must keep to the announced theme

4.  It must be “quilt-shop-quality” fabric

Our second raffle will be in April.  For our April drawing the theme is Batik fabrics, this fabric is widely available at all the quilt shops.  The basket will be available in March and then again in April, so bring your fat quarter whenever you can.  Any questions, contact Linda Hamel.

Interested in Doing Quilt Repair?

The other evening at our meeting a gentleman asked if there was anyone interested in repairing two quilts.  If you are interested please contact him directly, you may either email or call him. If you are emailing him under the subject make sure you specify "Quilt repair" so that he doesn't accidentally delete the message.   He did mention that he has the fabric to do the necessary repairs on both quilts, he just needs the talent and is willing to pay for the repairs.  His name is Mike Gallagher, his number is 610-275-4831, his email is mikeona.bike@verizon.net .- Chris Candello

A Note of Thanks

What can I say, but "Thank you", "Thank you", "Thank you"!!!!!!!!!!  I couldn't believe it at the January meeting when my name was drawn to receive all the Thimbleberries Fat Quarters of fabric!  I was in total shock!!  Sincere thanks to each member who contributed a fat quarter to this special drawing.  Just wanted to let you know, I will not put my name in the basket for the next drawing, so you all will have a chance to win!   Again, sincere thanks.
