VFHQ News – April 2007

Lines from Lou

We’re turning twenty!  And we initiated the commemoration of our 20th anniversary with a smashing 2-day event—our free Turning Twenty workshop where we learned the turning twenty technique, had our machines tuned up and scissors sharpened by Steve (from Steve’s), received massages, ate too much (at least I did), received design advice from each other, and generally had a fantastic time!  Kudos to Chris Candello who pulled it all together!  Watch for further opportunities to mark this milestone in our guild’s illustrious history.

April Meeting – April 17, 2007

To celebrate spring, we’ll have a ROUND ROBIN at our upcoming April meeting.  The Round Robin will consist of 4 mini workshops from which guild members will choose two.  Our mini workshops include the following:  Quilted Postcards with Linda Hamel, Decorating with Quilts by Judy Snook, Embroidery Stitches with Sally Rapp, and Machine Stippling with Rosemary Geisler.  In past years, these “round-robbins” have been a big hit.

What a Time We Had!

Thank you, Chris, for a fabulous weekend of quilting, camaraderie, and all-around fun.  In case you missed the Turning Twenty Workshops, Chris Candello arranged a spectacular two-day event to kick off the commemoration of our 20th Anniversary.  She invited Steve to come both days to service our machines and sharpen our scissors, as well as a professional masseuse to relax us.  Chris asked Generations to provide many fat quarters which we could buy to complete our quilts.  Chris and Beth bought many delicious treats including an anniversary cake.  And, as if that weren't enough, those who attended also brought goodies.  Some members came one day, and some came both days.  A fantastic time was had by all!

Welcome to New Members

Jean Corday lives in Collegeville and heard about us from Chris Candello.  Jean’s grandmother taught her to sew and her favorite quilting projects are table runners, gift items, and bed size quilts.  She enjoys cooking, reading, gardening and exercising.  Jean works in accounts payable.  Jean’s family includes her husband, Rich, her daughter Christy (who is engaged to be married to Tom), and her son, Jason.  They also have a yellow lab named Bailey.

Welcome to Florence Ham who also heard about us from Chris Candello.  Florence has been quilting for six years and got interested when she was in Arizona in 2000.  She enjoys patchwork the most and has made many bed-size quilts.  She also enjoys knitting.  And, since she’s retired, she has time to enjoy both.

Barbara Melnyk has been sewing since elementary school and found us through Steve’s.  Barbara made her wedding dress and has also made bathing suits to winter coats.  She got interested in quilting through her sister and sister-in-law.  She enjoys any machine-sewn projects and has made a few quilts.  She also enjoys knitting and reading.  Barbara is an account administrator at Aetna and has been married to Mike for 23 years.  She has a daughter Julie who just turned 16 and is learning to drive.  They have a la/Sheppard mix dog named Lisa who is eleven-years-old.  Barbara once owed a flower shop and she is also a Girl Scout.

Welcome to Linda Reese who heard about us through her friend, Barb Jones.  Linda sewed about 25 years ago but recently has become interested in quilting.  She also enjoys reading, music, and making things for her granddaughter.  Linda was a school bus driver for 22 yrs.  She has three sons, one is married, 1 granddaughter, two dogs, and two cats.

The Singing Quilter

The Singing Quilter, Cathy Miller, and husband John, will give a 2-set performance on Friday, April 20, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. At the Community Music School, 775 W. Main Street, Trappe, PA.  Tickets will cost $12 from Sally Rapp or $15.00 at the door.  For more information about Cathy Miller, visit her website.

Call for Photos & Scrapbooks

As mentioned earlier, in preparation for our 20th anniversary, we are seeking out guild photos and history books that past historians may have.  If you have these, please contact Cathy Fennell and she will take them off your hands.  The books will then be archived in the library at Rosemont College.

Are You Up to the Challenge?

We all have 5 months remaining.  Ample time to prepare our entries for this year’s challenge.  It’s a uniquely fun theme this year and everyone is looking forward to seeing how members come up with their interpretations.  Incase you’ve forgotten, below are the rules:

VFHQ Challenge 2006/2007—The Proverbial Challenge

Choose a proverb that you enjoy or that has some meaning to you and devise a way to creatively express it in a quilt (which you will, of course, design and create).

Your interpretation of your proverb may be a literal representation, or an ironic portrayal, or a somewhat esoteric depiction, etc.

Use any construction technique and any fabric you wish.  And you may use components that are appliquéd, pieced, embroidered, cross-stitched, painted, embellished, etc., or a combination thereof.

You must include with your submission a typed description identifying the proverb you chose and explaining the rational for your design.  Your description should be between 50 to 75 words (no more than 100 words) using 12-point type (or standard typewriter size), on a card or paper no larger than 8½ x 8½.  (If you don’t have access to a computer or typewriter, a neatly hand-printed description will be acceptable.)

Your creation can be any quilted item (including jacket, bag, etc.).

The size of a quilted wall hanging should be no larger than 50" on any given side.

Your creation should be something made during the coming year (between 10/2006 and 9/2007).

As usual, one entry per-person will be accepted.

Completed challenge quilts will be displayed and voted on at the September guild meeting in 2007.

All questions regarding this challenge should be directed to Linda Hamel at 610.454-1283 or dhamel1283@aol.com

As food for thought, here are some proverbs to consider: a penny saved is a penny earned, don’t count your chickens before they hatch, make hay while the sun shines, every cloud has a silver lining, beauty is only skin deep, all that glitters is not gold, better late than never, and a stitch in time saves nine.

More proverbs can be found at the following web site:
