VFHQ News –
April 2007
Lines from Lou
We’re turning twenty! And we initiated the commemoration of our 20th
anniversary with a smashing 2-day event—our free Turning Twenty workshop where
we learned the turning twenty technique, had our machines tuned up and scissors
sharpened by Steve (from Steve’s), received massages, ate too much (at least I
did), received design advice from each other, and generally had a fantastic
time! Kudos to Chris Candello who pulled
it all together! Watch for further
opportunities to mark this milestone in our guild’s illustrious history.
April Meeting –
To celebrate spring, we’ll have a
ROUND ROBIN at our upcoming April meeting.
The Round Robin will consist of 4 mini workshops from which guild
members will choose two. Our mini
workshops include the following: Quilted
Postcards with Linda Hamel, Decorating with Quilts by Judy Snook, Embroidery
Stitches with Sally Rapp, and Machine Stippling with Rosemary Geisler. In past years, these “round-robbins” have been a big hit.

Rosemary Geisler,
What a Time We Had!
Thank you,
Chris, for a fabulous weekend of quilting, camaraderie, and all-around
fun. In case you missed the Turning
Twenty Workshops, Chris Candello arranged a spectacular two-day event to kick
off the commemoration of our 20th Anniversary. She invited Steve to come both days to service
our machines and sharpen our scissors, as well as a professional masseuse to
relax us. Chris asked Generations to
provide many fat quarters which we could buy to complete our quilts. Chris and Beth bought many delicious treats
including an anniversary cake. And, as
if that weren't enough, those who attended also brought goodies. Some members came one day, and some came both
days. A fantastic time was had by all!

Are You Up to the Challenge?
We all have 5 months remaining. Ample time to prepare our
entries for this year’s challenge.
It’s a uniquely fun theme this year and everyone is looking forward to
seeing how members come up with their interpretations. Incase you’ve forgotten, below are the rules:
VFHQ Challenge 2006/2007—The Proverbial Challenge
Choose a proverb that you enjoy or
that has some meaning to you and devise a way to creatively express it in a
quilt (which you will, of course, design and create).
Your interpretation of your proverb
may be a literal representation, or an ironic portrayal, or a somewhat esoteric
depiction, etc.
Use any construction technique and any
fabric you wish. And you may use
components that are appliquéd, pieced, embroidered, cross-stitched, painted,
embellished, etc., or a combination thereof.
You must include with your submission
a typed description identifying the proverb you chose and explaining the
rational for your design. Your
description should be between 50 to 75 words (no more
than 100 words) using 12-point type (or standard typewriter size), on a card or
paper no larger than 8½ x 8½. (If you
don’t have access to a computer or typewriter, a neatly hand-printed
description will be acceptable.)
Your creation can be any quilted item
(including jacket, bag, etc.).
The size of a quilted wall hanging
should be no larger than 50" on any given side.
Your creation should be something made
during the coming year (between 10/2006 and 9/2007).
As usual, one entry per-person will be
accepted.
Completed challenge quilts will be
displayed and voted on at the September guild meeting in 2007.
All questions regarding this challenge
should be directed to Linda Hamel at

As food for thought, here are some
proverbs to consider: a penny saved is a penny earned, don’t count your
chickens before they hatch, make hay while the sun shines, every cloud has a
silver lining, beauty is only skin deep, all that glitters is not gold,
better late than never, and a stitch in time saves nine. More proverbs can be found at the
following web site: |
