VFHQ News – August 2007

Lines from Lou

September marks the end of my tenure serving as president of the guild, so this is my last opportunity to write “Lines from Lou.” That being the case, I must tell you how much I appreciate all those who have helped to make these last two years an absolute pleasure.  First and foremost, our board has consisted of the finest collection of people with whom I’ve ever had the opportunity to serve—every one talented, capable, and reliable!  And our fine committee heads have been fabulous at keeping our very active guild going strong.  And, last-but-not least, I appreciate all of you for all you do and for allowing me the privilege of serving you as president of this outstanding organization.  While the job has required a tremendous amount of time and effort , it’s been a true labor of love and a real highlight of my life.
    Thanks to all!

Lou

The culmination of our challenge for 2006/2007 – The Proverbial Challenge – is rapidly approaching.  By way of review, please see the rules on the website.  Good luck to all who are working to complete their projects.

All questions regarding this challenge should be directed to Linda Hamel at 610.454-1283 or dhamel1283@aol.com

Challenge Ideas Requested!

As we near the end of this year’s challenge, it’s time to consider the challenge for the up-coming year.  If you have any ideas, please submit them to Linda Hammel ASAP either in person at the meeting or by e-mail or by phone.

And if you’d like to participate on a committee to determine and outline the upcoming challenge, e-mail Linda ASAP.

Giant Fabric & Quilting Book SaleSeptember 18, 2007

Clear out your unwanted fabric from your stash – fabrics you liked when purchased, but that you now know they are probably not going to get used. Included in the sale this year are any quilting books you may want to part with or duplicates you may have.  Why not sell them at our September 18th meeting?  All monies realized would go directly back to you so that you can buy more new fabric to replace what you just sold.  And remember – one quilter’s stash–trash is another quilter’s treasure.  So whether you’re bringing fabric to sell or not, come prepared with cash for those treasures you’re sure to find!

Here are the guidelines:

 1.      You set the price

 2.      Each piece of fabric, “package” of fabrics or quilting books must be clearly labeled with:
   your name
   price you are asking
yardage or size of fabric (not for books)

 3.      Put all this information on a removable label or tag so when the buyer goes to pay at the cashier table it can be recorded on the “sellers” sheet.

 4.      You may also sell kits, completed tops or orphan blocks.  (PLEASE no U.F.O.s”.)  All items or packages, must be labeled like above.

 5.      Pre-register your name with Sally Rapp (610-489-6892) by Friday, September 14 if you plan to sell fabric.  Since we have to plan the set-up in advance, only names registered will be given table space at the September meeting.

 6.      Buyers need to pay in cash, so come prepared.

 7.      Bring your own shopping bag to take home your purchases.

We hope this will give members an opportunity to earn some money for themselves while cleaning out your fabric stash or quilting books to make room for more.

If you have questions, please call Sally Rapp or Gloria Clark.

Reserve the Date

Happy 20th anniversary to the Valley Forge Homestead Quilters! Mark your calendar to attend our gala celebration on Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, King of Prussia, PA.  Although this is being held on our regular meeting night, a very special celebration dinner and program will begin at 6:00 PM.  Most of the cost will be covered by our guild budget so the cost to members is only $10.00 (in keeping with responses from our survey).  You can pay Jean Hayden to reserve your spot.  We will have plenty of food, dessert, entertainment, door prizes and much more.  Don’t miss out! Reserve your spot at the gala today!

Membership Renewal Time

Time to re-up!  Membership renewal will start in August (at the August meeting) and run through September.  Annual dues are $25.  Please plan accordingly and be ready to give your check or cash to the Membership Committee at the August or September meeting OR mail your check to Linda Hamel, 334 Avon Avenue, Collegeville, PA 19426.  The Executive Board and your Membership Committee appreciate your help in expediting renewal – ours is a very active guild and we need everyone’s prompt action to accomplish this by the October deadline.  Thanks!

Welcome

Jacquie Santangelo heard about us at the PA Quilt Extravaganza and again, at our quilt show last year.  She has been sewing since she was a little girl and was influenced by her mother and her father’s mother.  Her first try at quilting was when she bought a kit in 1977 and made her first log cabin quilt.  In 1997, she attended the PA Quilt Extravaganza and really caught the quilting fever.  Jacquie enjoys quick quilting projects, wearable quilted clothing, holiday projects and any thing that has a star pattern.  She has completed a bed-size quilt but also enjoys collecting glass baskets, crocheting, sewing, painting and attending quilt shows and exhibits.  Jacquie is a printing production coordinator.  Her husband and she enjoy their home away from home in Ocean City, MD when they are able.  They have two children who are both married.  Her daughter has a daughter Avery and two sons, Luke and Vincent while her son has a daughter Isabella and a son, Tommy.  Jacquie loves being a grandmother.  When not in Ocean City, MD, she resides in Trappe, Pa with her husband, Tom, and their three cats.

Meeting Minutes – July 17, 2007

Lou Chandler welcomed all including two guest and one new member

As we passed along the sign-up sheet for raffle ticket sales at the Upper Providence Day and the Hershey Quilt Show, Lou sang “In the Good Old Summer Time” while playing her grandmother’s old ukulele.  Members all joined in to finish the rendition and continued on to sing “Happy Birthday” to Shellie Blake since this is her actual birthday.

Members were treated to an ice cream social with all the toppings.

BOM winner—Paula Pettyjohn

Door Prizes --  Jacqui Santangelo and Lisa Hudock

Evening bee, Tuesday, July 24th 6:30 – 9:00 at the home of Beth Quigley.

Afternoon bee, Tuesday, August 14th 12:30-3:30 at the home of Gloria Clark

Ally Howell and Ann Lister won fat quarter raffle drawing for the Reproduction 1930’s fabrics.   The next raffle will be in November.  The theme is traditional Christmas, Hanukah, or winter.

Linda Hamel reminded us to work on our proverbial challenge, which will take place in September.  She also asked for suggestions for next years challenge and anyone interested in working on  a challenge committee, should let Linda know.

Gloria introduced Jeannie Campbell who explained her technique of making Bargello Quilts.  She showed examples of Bargello as well as other quilts.

Jean said there would be more information coming for our October workshop.

Shirley passed out comfort quilts kits and batting.  The quilts will be delivered to Walter Reed Hospital, St. Christopher’s, and the Abramson Cancer Center in the fall.  Bring in your quilts whenever you finish.

Gloria Clark thanked everyone responsible for making the raffle quilt, which was displayed on the back rack.  Everyone was invited to take a close-up look.

A motion was made and a vote was taken to accept the changes in the bylaws.

If you are interested in making a testimonial quilt for someone outside the guild, see Nancy Hannum. for details.

Lou will not be at the August meeting so, while she’ll continue as president until September, this was her last opportunity to conduct guild meeting.  She thanked the members, the Board, and the committee members for their support during her tenure.

Show & Tell

Adjourned: 9:20 with time to shop.

Respectfully submitted

Nancy Hannum, Recording Secretary

Thank You

Thanks to those members who volunteered to sell tickets at the Hershey Quilt Show.  It was a great three days of sales and we sold close to $600.00 of raffle tickets.  Your sales ability and friendliness was what helped us achieve this great start and I truly appreciate you taking the time to do this, special thanks to Linda Hamel and Lou Chandler.
