VFHQ News – November 2007

Clips from Chris

We’ve now turned twenty and we marked the occasion with a gala event complete with special guests, sumptuous food, delightful presentations, and prizes galore.  Thank you to everyone who worked so hard making our anniversary celebration such a success!

Going from one great event to another, our annual Fall Retreat 2007 was a big hit.  Sally once again outdid herself by coordinating a wonderful weekend in a resort type facility in the country.  We had lots of time to meet old and new friends, shop, eat and do what ever we desired. The weekend allowed several (me included) to complete a few UFOs and of course produce some new ones. We got a math lesson (I choose to buy the special ruler) and enjoyed an array of discoveries.  Our toy discovery of the weekend was the Oliso iron (that is one great toy), the technique was how to stain a quilt with coffee (you didn’t want the coffee anyway!), and the phrase of the weekend was: We don’t make mistakes! We make improvements! This of course pertained to our favorite stitch, the frog stitch?!

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Chris

Congratulations!

The Friends of Berks County Public Libraries ran a quilt block contest in conjunction with their author luncheon that featured Jennifer Chiaverini, writer of the Elm Creek Quilters series of books.  Linda Hamel of VHGQ Guild entered three blocks in this contest.  Congratulations to Linda who won two of the five prizes for two of her blocks, which depict two of her favorite books.  Her block entitled “Memoirs of a Geisha” won Most Effective Block and is featured on the cover of Bookends, the Journal of the Friends of Berks County Public Libraries.  Her block entitled “Lonesome Dove” won the Grand Prize.  Way to go, Linda!

A Request

Theresa Ringker, who lives near the Barn Playhouse called Vickie Lopresti.  She does not sew, or quilt, but her son has a blanket  (31" X 31").  He received this blanket when he was born and has used it until it is now in tatters.   She would like someone to use the remains of this blanket inside a new traditional quilt for him.  Theresa’s son is now 8 years old.   If anyone is interested in doing this for her, please contact her directly at 484-231-8557.  She would love to have it done by someone who lives in Montgomery County where she lives, but if no one here is able to do this, Vickie did suggest that she contact someone in Lancaster County.   She found our guild and in particular, Vickie, through our website.  Thanks for considering this.

Quilting Past and Present

Sally Rapp, Jean Hayden, and Nancy Hannum were guest speakers at the Assisted Living Senior Suites in East Norriton during the Assisted Living Week festivities in September.  The program "Quilting Past and Present" focused on how the tools of quilting have changed over time, types of quilts, and a show of quilts.  The members' quilts were displayed as well as circulated among the participants.  Time for questions followed. Sally, Jean, and Nancy enjoyed giving the presentation and got a "good feeling" from the interest and pleasure shown by the seniors.  They were also rewarded by the note of appreciation from the director Tonya Monteleone who said, "Thanks so very much ...!  The residents LOVED your presentation and the beautiful quilts. They were talking about it all day."

Fat Quarter Raffle

The current Quarter Raffle drawing will occur at November’s guild meeting.  The fabric theme for this time is Christmas, Hanukkah or winter theme fabric.  To participate, simply bring a fat quarter, place it in the designated basket, along with your name, and you’ll be eligible for the drawing to win them all!   You will receive one chance to win for each fat quarter you contribute.  The guidelines are simple:

1.  The fabric must be a fat quarter measuring 18" X 22".

2.  It should be washed and ironed

3.  It must keep to the announced theme

4.  It should be “quilt-shop-quality” fabric

Any questions, contact Linda Hamel

Meeting Minutes – 20th Anniversary Celebration
October 16, 2007

*       Chris Candello welcomed all including guests.

*       The tables were covered with tablecloths (made by Chris), candles and a flowerpot with fabric flowers, which were crafted by some of our members.

*       The room was decorated with Turning Twenty quilts made by our members.  Ten of the quilts were numbered and there was a game to guess who made what.

*       A Scrapbook slide presentation was shown before and during dinner.  Cathy Fennell did an excellent job putting this presentation together.

*       20th Anniversary Favor:  Each member in attendance was presented with a new Guild pin.

*       There are five women who are original guild members, “founding quilters” who were presented with a corsage:  Jean Hayden, Anne Palmer, Sally Rapp, Gail Dovalovsky and Rosalie Cunningham.

*       Past Presidents were presented with a rose.  The first Guild President (5 years) was Jackie Paltrineri who was interviewed by Jean Corday regarding the Guild’s inception, history and memorable moments.

*       Chris Candello suggested that the members be recognized by length of time (in 5 year increments) for which they are members by standing.

*       A new guild banner marking the Guild’s 20th Anniversary, designed and constructed by Chris Candello, was displayed.  Jean Hayden made the first banner for the Guild.  Chris presented Jean with that original banner.

*       The Featured Presentation was by Linda Mendenhall and her daughter, Amy Hackett, of Generations Quilt Shop.  Both ladies shared entertaining stories about fabrics and their quilts.  There were patterns and fabric kits available.

*       BOM winner:  Sally Rapp.

*       Door Prizes:  All members present were given a door prize.

*       Bees:  Evening –Tuesday, October 23rd at 6:30:  Vicki Lopresti
Afternoon –Tuesday, November 13th at
12:30:  Martine Green

*       Workshop:  Jean Hayden discussed there will be a “bag” workshop in January 2008 and a Comfort Quilt workshop in February 2008 – details will follow.

*       Comfort Quilts are being collected by Shirley Horning

*       The winners of the “Who Made What Quilt” game were Denny, Gloria, Lisa, Erin and Vicki (correctly guessing 4 and/or 5 of the quilters).

*       Show and tell.

*       A good time was had by all!

*       Meeting adjourned:  approximately 9:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
