VFHQ News – October 2007

Clips from Chris

Thinking back when I decided to help coordinate our 20th anniversary gala...I was thinking...boy, 20 years, that’s a long time...and then realized...lo and behold it is also my own 20th wedding anniversary. That is when I had a true reality check....20 years.  I can really relate to our founders and original members. They have worked very hard for the past 20 years to continue to keep the love of quilting going and as we all know that is a lot of work. Thank you so much for a job well done.

As for our celebration...I must confess I truly am a kid a heart...myself along with our committee members have had a great time planning our special dinner celebration for all to enjoy !!! See you in October.
    Chris

Challenge 2008

Pennsylvania

Choose any landmark, historical event, flora, fauna, tradition, location, or motto that conveys some essence of our great state of Pennsylvania and devise a way to creatively express it in a quilt (which you will, of course, design and create).

Use any construction technique and any fabric you wish.  And you may use components that are appliquéd, pieced, embroidered, cross-stitched, painted, embellished, etc., or a combination thereof.

You must include with your submission a typed description explaining the aspect of Pennsylvania you chose and any relevant rational for your design.  Your description should be between 50 to 75 words (no more than 100 words) using 12-point type (or standard typewriter size), on a card or paper no larger than 8½ x 8½.  (If you don’t have access to a computer or typewriter, a neatly hand-printed description will be acceptable.)

Your creation can be any quilted item (including jacket, bag, etc.).

The size of a quilted wall hanging should be no larger than 50" on any given side.

Your creation should be something made during the coming year (between 10/2007 and 9/2008).

As usual, one entry per-person will be accepted.

Completed challenge quilts will be displayed and voted on at the September guild meeting in 2008.

A FUN quilting opportunity

I have a friend who is the Director at the Peter Wentz Farmstead (Rt. 363 and 73 in Worcester Twp.) and who is looking for some hand-quilters to finish quilting a nine-patch quilt that has been on their frame for 20 years.  Yes, that's 20 years!!!!!  As part of their Special Activity Days, she would like to put a few of us in costume and stage us around the quilt to finish it on Oct. 20.  She said there’s very little left to do on the quilt, and when done, we can work on our own quilting projects (a free lunch will also be provided).  If you’re interested, please contact me directly at (610) 948-5739 or PattiMac1 @ MSN . com (remove the spaces).

Fat Quarter Raffle

The current Fat-Quarter Raffle drawing will occur at November’s guild meeting.  The fabric theme for this time is Christmas, Hanukkah or winter theme fabric.  To participate, simply bring a fat quarter, place it in the designated basket, along with your name, and you’ll be eligible for the drawing to win them all!   You will receive one chance to win for each fat quarter you contribute.  The guidelines are simple:

1.  The fabric must be a fat quarter measuring 18" X 22".

2.  It should be washed and ironed

3.  It must keep to the announced theme

4.  It should be “quilt-shop-quality” fabric

Any questions, contact Linda Hamel

A Little Help—A Good Cause

Norma Brechbiel came across an opportunity to help with a worthy quilting need and brought it to the attention of the guild board—and we agreed.  Please read her note below.  A container will be located at the back of the room A container will be located at the back of the room for whatever you might want to donate to the cause.

My husband and I had the privilege of going to Blueberry Mountain Bible Camp and Conference Center over the Labor Day weekend on a short-term mission trip with several members of our church. Bob and Donna Sloma run the conference center. They have 3 boys and I girl. We met Katie, their 15-year-old daughter. She is very interested in quilting. In fact, she showed me her "Yellow Brick Road" quilt she is making. A lady in her church (who she calls her teacher) is helping her with it. She is doing a great job on the quilt, and really is very talented.  Only, she has a little problem--she was given a White sewing machine, and also a Brother machine. She was having trouble with the tension on both machines. Bob and I tried to help her as much as we could, but really came to the conclusion that the machines needed a good cleaning and servicing. She simply does not have the money to have them fixed.  I know it will be rather hard for some of you to imagine this, however, the Slomas live on Blueberry Mountain which is five miles from Weld (the nearest town, which is only a cross road with a general store, gas station, and church).  She can't baby sit to earn money since they are so far removed from civilization. Also, she cannot get a part-time job for the same reason.  My heart went out to her, for she definitely has a talent for sewing, but is so frustrated when she can't get her machine to work.  (I'm sure we all have experienced this at one time or another.)  What is the solution to this problem? I know V.F. Homestead Quilters is a very caring group who reach out to others in need.  (For example, making the Comfort Quilts for St. Christopher's Hospital, and the Univ. of PA cancer patients). I was wondering if it would be at all possible for us to take up a little collection for Katie so she could get at least one of her machines working again. (I could place a little container on the sign-in table for donations) … Thank you very much for your time.

Thank You!

Dear friends:

Thank you very much for your recent contribution of $50.00 to the American Cancer Society.  Our support of the Memorial program is appreciated and valued.  This letter will serve as your receipt.

Your card was sent to Valley Forge Homestead Quilters, in memory of Nancy Dietch and was signed by Valley Forge Homestead Quilters.

As the largest source of non-federal funding for cancer research, the American Cancer Society funds approximately $120 million in grants annually.  Thanks to this funding of vital research, the current survival rate is 65%, resulting in more than 10 million cancer survivors alive today.  This is part of our lifesaving mission along with education and services to cancer patients and their families.  Through your generous support, these programs will continue to be available for the people of Pennsylvania.

If, in the future, you would like to receive information concerning cancer or any of our services, please do not hesitate to contact your American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345.
